Mason Myers comes up one lap shy of first career Silver Dollar Speedway victory at Wingless Cup

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – September 17, 2009…Returning to the Silver Dollar Speedway for just the second time this season the Myers Brothers Racing team had its second career wingless sprint car win at the track in sights, until a final lap pass took away the opportunity from driver Mason Myers as searched for his first victory at the Wingless Cup.

Last season saw the Myers Brothers Racing team compete in all 28 Hunt Magnetos point races at the Silver Dollar Speedway/Placerville Speedway and finish third and fourth in the final standings, but the Browns Valley, CA duo has spent this year running over at the Marysville Raceway Park in the Browns Valley RV/Performance Auto Supply Wingless Sprint Series.

The Wingless Cup on Wednesday September 9 marked the first time that Myers Brothers Racing has been in action at SDS since the Silver Cup in April and although the night didn't end how the team might have wanted, it was still a solid event nonetheless with a pair of top-five finishes to conclude the evening.

In 2008 Mason Myers ended the year third in the Silver Dollar standings and although coming extremely close a few different times, he was unable to pick up a main event win during the season. Going into the Wingless Cup he looked to change that and got the night started off on a strong note by timing-in fourth fastest out of 29 cars aboard the Franks Backhoe, Performance Auto Supply, Matco Tools No. 3m.

The 19 year-old racer then started from the sixth spot in his heat race and scored a fourth place finish to transfer into the main event, where he lined-up from the inside of the second row. When the green flag came out on the 25-lap contest the drivers on the front row missed the bottom and Myers took advantage of it to slice his way into the top spot coming out of turn two. With the track being very slick and treacherous the driver of the distinctive looking No. 3m machine known as "pinkie" focused on hitting his marks towards the bottom of the raceway.

As 2009 Silver Dollar Speedway champion Jimmy Pettit put intense pressure on his rear bumper Myers ran a near mistake free race until coming to the white flag when Pettit was able to get to the inside of him, which dropped the 3m sprinter back to second. Heading down the backstretch Myers tried a last ditch effort, but Pettit didn't make a mistake and he was forced to settle for second at the checkered. The end of the main event was surprisingly similar to last year's Coke Championship Night when Mason held the lead all the way till the last corner, until '08 SDS track champ Keith Bloom Jr. was able to get by and steal the win away.

Brother Cody Myers also had a strong night at the Wingless Cup as he put on a solid charge in the main event to carve his way forward for a top-five finish. The 20 year-old started off the event by qualifying 13th fastest overall, before driving to victory in the opening heat race at the helm of the Browns Valley Truck & RV, Aces Heavy Transport, Cal West Concrete No. 9m. Myers then started from the 14th spot on the grid in the feature and maneuvered his way through the field to bring home a fourth place finish at the stripe.

This weekend will find the Myers Brothers Racing team returning to the Marysville Raceway Park for the final race of the Browns Valley RV/Performance Auto Supply Wingless Sprint Series season. Going into the night Cody ranks second in the standings with Mason sitting eighth.
