Two More Championships for Lunstra/Dobmeier
Motorsports
9/8/09
Last Friday marks the 70th career feature
win at River Cities Speedway for Mark Dobmeier and this being his
tenth season driving a sprint car on the fast 4/10ths high-banked
oval gives him an average of 7 wins per season. That’s
impressive no matter which way you look at it.
It started by coming from the inside of the fifth row
in the heat and charging up to the number two position finishing
behind the number 8 of Casey Mack. Then in the feature, Mark
started eighth and raced up to 3rd right at the start
behind Wade Nygaard. As the race went on, Dobmeier went to
the bottom of the race track to take the lead and lapped up to
fifth capturing his 70th career victory at the speedway.
“We have always done really well here,” explains
Dobmeier. “The track is always very ‘racey’ and it gives us
multiple lines to move forward. 70 wins is hard to imagine,
we’ve been racing here for ten years and we know we have won quite
a few, but I had no idea we were at 70! I certainly couldn’t
have done it without the support of our team and sponsors.
They do everything they can week in and week out and the crew
always gives me a good car to drive.”
Following the exciting win at River Cities, Lunstra/Dobmeier
Motorsports headed to Knoxville Raceway for the track’s 56th
Annual Season Championship night.
The engine blew in the Senske & Son Dahlstrom
Motors #13 early in hot laps, but the crew hurried and put a new
power plant in the car to make the qualifying run. Mark set a
6th quick time of 15.023, but the team missed their
qualifying slot so in return the #13 was kicked out of the invert
for the start of the main event.
Dobmeier came from fifth to third in the heat race and
then had to start on the inside of the 7th row for the
main event. Dynamite Dobmeier raced up to seventh until he
noticed a bad vibration coming from the driveline. He pulled
the car in, not finishing the race, and the crew tore apart the
driveline and noticed a u-joint that was near explosion.
The team finished out the Knoxville season with a very
respectful 9th place finish in the championship behind
Lynton Jeffery.
“Our year wasn’t the best here at Knoxville,” explains
team co-owner Dave Lunstra. “We had lots of bad luck with
motor and equipment failures. We have won features here
before, so we all know we are able win…this year wasn’t our year at
this place. We’ll take everything we learned from this season
and put it into next. But, all in all I am excited to say we
finished in the top ten in points here at Knoxville and overall we
have had a very strong season going.”
Sunday night was Huset’s Speedway for Lunstra/Dobmeier
Motorsports and all they needed to do was start the main event to
earn their third consecutive Track Championship at the Speedway.
In qualifying, the front nose wing posts broke causing
the nose wing to flip upside down and land on the hood. This
created a very tight racecar for Mark throughout the 1 lap time
trial on the rough and tacky surface. He qualified 15th
out of a field of 17 with a 12.30, which was certainly not how the
team wanted to start the evening.
Dobmeier finished fourth in the heat race after
starting near the tail of the field at eighth and then lined up
ninth for the start of the main event. He made smart passes
throughout the event and was up to second with 8 laps to go.
Mark was closing a straightaway lead on Terry McCarl when the
checkered flag fell and Dobmeier earned his 13th top
five finish of the season at the “Home of the Professionals” and
added another Season Championship to the record books.
That makes three in a row for Lunstra/Dobmeier
Motorsports at Huset’s Speedway in which only two other drivers
have been successful of winning three consecutive championships at
the famed Speedway.
“We’re very proud of winning our third consecutive,”
announces Dobmeier. “We had a very good season here at
Huset’s and we look forward to the next! The crew does an
awesome job every week and it’s very pleasing to have this
championship.”
