Brett Miller tallies runner-up finish during Coca-Cola Championship Night at Silver Dollar Speedway

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – August 30, 2009…Going into this past Friday's Championship Night at Silver Dollar Speedway Brett Miller looked for a good run to help build some momentum towards the upcoming Gold Cup Race of Champions and the Chico, CA driver did just that by leading laps and finishing runner-up to the blazing hot Kyle Hirst in the 410 sprint car main event.

The runner-up finish also marked Miller's best result in the Friday night Feather Falls Casino Championship Series since finishing third on opening night back in April. "We would have liked to win tonight, but Kyle has been running real well lately so we can't be too down about finishing second to him," said the driver of the Care Free Pools, Wolfe Electric, Simpson Race Products No. 1x sprinter. "The car has been really good and that gives me a lot of confidence going into the Gold Cup in two weeks."

This past Friday's event was sponsored in part by Cherry St. Mini Storage, Napa Auto Parts and Coca-Cola as the weekly 410 year came to a close with the 21st and final point race of the Feather Falls Casino season. Miller started off the night by qualifying ninth fastest in the 24 car field and then scored a fourth place finish in his heat race to transfer into the feature. When fast qualifier Kyle Hirst pulled the number six pill for the inversion the 20 year-old driver found himself on the outside of the front row for the 25-lap contest.

Following the four-wide salute to the fans the field came down for green and Miller quickly jumped out into the top spot in the first and second corners. The early circuits saw the Chico native pull away from the rest of the competitors as the Platinum Powder Coating, JP's Paint & Body, 6-feet Deep Clothing Maxim was locked down to the speedway to perfection. Hirst had been on the move though and claimed second on lap six, before closing in on Miller as traffic came into play. With slower cars ahead Miller looked to the high-side in turns three and four on lap 11, but lost just enough momentum in the top groove to give Hirst the chance to sneak under and take over the top spot.

Miller continued to run solidly in second as the race went on and after 25 laps of racing would cross under the checkered flag comfortably in the runner-up spot as Hirst won his fourth main event in the past six Silver Dollar Speedway races. It was also the second time Miller has run second to Hirst in that time span, after finishing runner-up to him during the Golden State Challenge Series sanctioned Tribute to Gary Patterson on July 25.

The Care Free Pools Racing team will now take this coming weekend off in preparation for the 56 annual Gold Cup Race of Champions, which will be held at the Silver Dollar Speedway on September 9-12. After not competing in the event last year Miller will look for a good run to try and get into the Saturday night main event for the first time in his career. "The Gold Cup is as big as it gets out here and we definitely would like to get into that A-main for the first time," Miller said.

When the World of Outlaws competed at the Silver Dollar Speedway earlier this year in the Mini Gold Cup the "Catfish" was able to qualify for his first career A-main start with the series during opening night and he'll look for more of the same at the biggest 410 sprint car event in the west. "We were good at the Mini Gold Cup even though we were still fighting through some bugs with the car so I definitely think we'll be in an even better position this time around," he said. "There will be a lot of really good cars there, but we're up to the challenge and can't wait to hit the track."
