Tyler Walker Sets New GSC Win Record with Win; Goes Onto Clinch First GSC Title

By Gary Costa

Placerville, Ca (August 22, 2009) – In only their second season together, car owners Scott and Kathy Chastain and driver Tyler Walker have put together a winning combination. The team has been flawless in their '09 campaign as they have turned in a record-setting Golden State Challenge Series season. Walker put an exclamation point on his 2009 Golden State Challenge Series season by not only winning the 30 lap feature at Placerville Speedway, but by also clinching his and SC Motorsports' first GSC championship.

"I had tears in my eyes when I was on the cool down lap," Walker shared. "Winning the championship means so much to me. I can't thank everyone on this team enough. They all worked hard for this, and to win it like we did…..I'm just ecstatic!"

With the Placerville victory, Walker's win record for the season has totaled 9 victories, and now holds the single season win record that was previously held by Tim Kaeding. The NMI Industrial Contractors No. 24 has a total of 10 wins thus far this season. The non-GSC win came at Skagit Speedway where Walker picked-up a preliminary win at the Dirt Cup.

The teams incredible GSC season kicked-off with an eighth place finish at Placerville Speedway on March 28. The following week the team won at Antioch on April 4, and then began to string wins together from there. The team picked-up eight more wins at Petaluma Speedway (2), Ocean Speedway, the Tulare Thunderbowl, Placerville Speedway (2), Santa Maria Speedway, and Silver Dollar Speedway.

The 9 wins is an impressive feat in itself, but what makes it even more impressive is the fact that the SC Motorsports team won features on all different tracks and racing surfaces during the course of the '09 season. The only tracks not won on were Calistoga and Cottage Grove Speedway in the 24 race season. Rounds 6, 13 and 14 of the Golden State Challenge were lost due to rain. "You couldn't write a better script. To end the season with another win, win the championship, and set a new season win record; this is unbelievable!", said Walker.

The road to the team's ninth victory was an exciting one. The evening started out with an engine swap after wheel-packing. Walker then drilled the Placerville clay, turning in a 10.276 which was good enough for fifth quick out of 25 cars. He finished second in his heat race and in the dash, which put Walker on the outside of the front row next to Kyle Hirst in the feature.

When the green flag flew, Hirst got the jump with Walker following. Jonathan Allard got past Walker during the early stages of the race. Hirst turned over after contact with a spun car. During the red, crew chief Lee Lindgren asked Walker, "How's the car? Do we need to make any changes?" Walker replied, "No, we're good, the car is working great!" When the green flag came out again, Walker and Allard went to war, battling each other through lapped traffic. With just a few laps to go, Walker drove to the bottom of the racetrack and passed Allard en route to his record setting ninth GSC victory.

"This is incredible. Tyler drove the wheels off of this thing like he does every night; he just has no quit in him," winning crew chief Lee Lindgren said. "I've got to thank Scott and Kathy Chastain. I love working for them, and to be a part of helping them win this championship means so much to me. I've got to thank all of the guys on this team; without them, this dream wouldn't have become a reality."
