Knoxville Nationals Re-Cap for Lunstra/Dobmeier
Motorsports
8/17/09
Rain can create a lot of problems for dirt track racers,
and it certainly was an issue for everyone at the 49th
Annual Super Clean Knoxville Nationals presented by Lucas Oil this
past week. It all started Wednesday night for Lunstra/Dobmeier
Motorsports and the Senske & Son Delta Oil #13 when the rain came
down before the guys’ were even able to hit the track for their test
session. The track crew was able to get the surface back in
race ready form which allowed the drivers to get their hot laps in
before the qualifying. When the rain hits the track like that
and even after the track workers get the track ran back in, it
creates a lock down race track with little passing.
After Dobmeier’s impressive 13th quick time
of 14.828, he had to start on the outside of the third row in his
heat. “We were very happy with our qualifying efforts,”
explains Dobmeier. “But, we were worried that it would be tough
to make that precious top four in the heat with the track being the
way it was.”
He raced up a spot to fifth, but that was just one
position outside of the transfer to make the “A” for the 1st
qualifying night of The Nationals. “The Senske & Son Delta
Oil car was good,” says Mark. “We were fast, but so was
everyone else on the track. It’s frustrating to have a surface
like this, but we do the best we can to make a great show for the
fans.”
His fifth place finish in the heat raced put Dobmeier on
the outside of the 5th row for the “B” feature in which
the track was a little wider, but still very narrow and tough to pass
on. At the drop of the green the veteran driver began his
charge to that all important top 4, but was not able to make it as he
finished 6th just two spots out.
With the efforts put forth from Mark and the team, the #13
was guaranteed a starting position of 15th in the “B”
feature on Saturday night. But, the rain came again. This
time it was enough to cancel the evening and the event was to be made
up the following night.
“The rain really frustrated us on Saturday,” exclaims
Mark. “We waited patiently to race again and then we had to
wait another day. It don’t matter too much that we had to wait,
but the biggest thing is that we were ready to race and our entire
crew was here to help. After the cancellation, part of our crew
had to head back home to make it to work. Plus, it’s very
disappointing for the fans.”
Sunday came and the rain halted, so the team got their
hot lap session and was ready to start on the inside of the 8th
row. Throughout the race, Mark was able to race up to twelfth
to cap off his best finish at the Knoxville Nationals.
“Overall we’re pretty happy with the week,” says
Mark. “The rain made it tough for all of us but we did finish
higher then we have in the past, even though we really wanted to make
the main event. We’ll take what we learned this week and be
back next year!”
