Jimmy Pettit finishes close second on Miller Glass Night at Silver Dollar Speedway
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA – August 11, 2009…Kicking off the final month of action at the Silver Dollar Speedway last Friday Chico, CA's Jimmy Pettit brought home a strong runner-up finish in an exciting wingless main event during a night of racing sponsored by Miller Glass Company.
Despite nearest point rival Jay Youngman picking up the win in the main event, Pettit remains atop the Hunt Magentos/Feather Falls Casino standings by 21 markers with just three races left in the season. "It was a fun race tonight and the track was really good and widened out so that made it pretty racy," Pettit said. "I saw those two guys battling hard up there for the lead and thought we might have a shot to get by, but just couldn't get the opening to get by Jay."
This past Friday's Miller Glass Night marked the 18th overall point race in the Feather Falls Casino championship series at the Silver Dollar Speedway and the "Love-shack" opened up the event by scoring a runner-up finish in the second heat race at the helm of the Kevin Sharrah Designs, Esplanade Taco Bell, Skyway Tool Center No. 24p.
Pettit then lined-up on the inside of the third row for the 20 lap wingless sprint car main event and when the green flag waved he would dice it up among the top-five cars on the speedway. Unlike recent weeks when the track had become very narrow for the main event, the track surface on this night had widened out and created much more room to race for the wingless competitors.
With the laps winding down the Chico racer placed the Ing. Excavation, Pep Boys, GT Promotions No. 24p machine solidly in the third position and when the white flag waved leader Scott Hall and second place Youngman would race each other wheel-to-wheel, until contact in the second corner knocked Hall off the track and caused Youngman to get sideways. This allowed Pettit to steal second and close in on Youngman in the final corner, but couldn't get the bite he wanted and settled for second at the checkered flag.
Despite not getting the win Pettit was happy with the run and result in the feature. "I have to thank "Captain Ron" and the whole team because the car was really good in the main event," he said. "We've been stuck on that one win for quite a while now and we really want to get back into victory lane so hopefully in these last few races we can accomplish that."
The "Love-shack" Motorsports team will be idle this Friday as the wingless division has the week off, before returning to action on August 21 to start the final three point races of the season.
