Mark Dobmeier – Knoxville, Huset’s and the Front Row
Challenge…
8/11/2009
With a rain out at River Cities Speedway,
Lustra/Dobmeier Motorsports went directly to Knoxville Raceway to get
one more race in on the legendary ½ mile dirt oval before the
upcoming 49th Annual Knoxville Nationals. They
started out the night qualifying 17th with a time of
15.694 against the 42-car field and lined up on the outside of the
front row in the heat race.
Taking the green, Dobmeier lead the heat to the finish
to give him yet another heat race victory and a 14th
starting position for the main event.
“I felt great going into the main,” explains
Dobmeier. “We just brought on Davey Whitworth from Kansas to
help us out this week and throughout the Nationals and having his
great knowledge and expertise on sprint cars certainly helps.
In the heat race the car was fantastic and motor ran great, I knew we
had a good shot in the main.”
Dobmeier made it up to seventh throughout the 25-lap
main, passing seven cars including the quick time setter, Cody Darrah
in the number 89.
Following Knoxville, it was off to the Huset’s Speedway
for Lunsta/Dobmeier Motorsports. 15 cars showed up for the
Sunday event and Dobmeier qualified in the number two spot behind the
11x of Gregg Bakker.
Starting 6th in the heat, Mark quickly made
headway and raced the Senske & Son Delta Oil #13 up to
third. The team elected to take the back row challenge and that
decision lined Dobmeier up at the tail of the 15-car field and
increased the winnings from $2500 to $8500. Once the green flag
was dropped, Dobmeier nailed the throttle and starting taking
positions.
The race went from flag to flag not allowing any restart
advantages for the #13, but Dobmeier came within 4 car lengths of
race victor Jake Peters, finishing second.
“The car was fast,” says the excited veteran. “If
we would have had one more lap or even a caution sometime throughout
the race, I think we’d a had it… The Senske & Son Delta Oil
machine was on a rail…I was able to put the car wherever I needed to
advancing my way towards the front of the field. The guys’ had
this car perfect!”
Terry McCarl’s “Front Row Challenge” was next up for
Lunstra/Dobmeier Motorsports, but it did not go quite the way the
team was expecting.
Dobmeier started ninth in the heat race and made his way
up to sixth, just one spot out of the transfer position into the main
event, then following the much anticipated foot races, that McCarl
likes to put on throughout the Osky Challenges, a small storm came
over the speedway dumping a large amount of water on the
racetrack.
The track crew worked vigorously on the racing surface
for nearly three hours until it was finally ready for the
B-main. Dobmeier, starting on the inside of the fourth row,
raced up to fifth with five laps to go and then on the last lap, the
motor in the Senske & Son Delta Oil #13 burned up ending the
night for Lunstra/Dobmeier Motorsports.
“It’s very disappointing,” says Mark, “We had a good car
tonight, but with the way the track got after the rain, it just made
the surface a lock down race track. Then the motor burnt up on
the last lap, which didn’t make any of us very pleased. We have
tomorrow off before we qualify on Wednesday for the Nationals, so
we’ll get a new motor in the car and we’ll be ready to rock.”
