Tyler Walker Barely Misses GSC Win Record; Heads to Oskaloosa and Knoxville

By Gary Costa

Watsonville, CA (August 8, 2009) – Tyler Walker was vying for his record ninth Golden State Challenge Series win of the season at Ocean Speedway in the Scott and Kathy Chastain owned JEI. Walker flew back into town Friday, after competing in the "Steel Palace Classic" in Oswego, NY in USAC Silver Crown competition, where Walker finished seventh.

Walker would apply Shark power to the Ocean Speedway surface, and brought the pristine No. 24 for fifth in qualifying out of the 25 cars that were on the clock. Walker guided the SC Motorsports, NMI Industrial Contractors Winged Sprint Car to second place in his heat race. His second place finish in the heat tossed him into the all-important 6 lap dash to determine the first four rows of the main event. Walker chased Brad Furr across the line for fifth in the dash, earning him a third row start in the feature.

When the green flag waved on the feature event, all eyes were on Walker as he was making his charge seeking his record setting ninth victory on the GSC season. As the race laps began to click-away, Walker would eventually move past Jason Statler and Tommy Tarlton, and set his sights on race leader, Bud Kaeding. Kaeding would not be denied this evening however, and Walker would settle in for second.

"We had a good car, and I take my hat off to Bud and his team – they did a great job. I wanted to win this one real bad, but it is what it is," Walker said. "My guys worked real hard all night, and I can't thank them enough. We're off to Oskaloosa, and Knoxville, and hopefully we can pick-up a race back there. This GSC championship is going down to the wire - and it should. The last race at Placerville will be an exciting night for sure."

Tyler Walker will be gunning for victory in the "Front Row Challenge" (he won the '98 & '02 versions), on Monday, August 10 and at the Knoxville Nationals. Walker's qualifying night at Knoxville will be this coming Thursday night.
