Disappointing Weekend for
Lunstra/Dobmeier Motorsports:
8/03/2009
No matter what type
of racing one is involved with, you always have at least one of those
weekends where things just don’t go the way they should. Well,
this past weekend was one of those weekends for Mark Dobmeier and
Lunstra/Dobmeier Motorsports.
It all started by
passing up the regular scheduled race at River Cities for
a special 410 Outlaw Sprint show at Rock Rapids Speedway in Rock
Rapids, Iowa. 21 cars showed up for this inaugural event on the
31st of July and Mark Dobmeier was there with his eyes set
on that $2500 payday.
The rain was on the
way at the time of pit meeting and the Rock Rapids Officials decided
to wait for the rain to come and leave, knowing that the storm was to
be short lived. Just as the officials said, the heavy rain
appeared and dropped nearly a ½ inch on the racetrack. With the
sun shortly behind, the officials attempted to run in the race track
to get in working order, but after two hours of push truck racing,
the track was just not cooperating. It was officially, a rain
out.
Following the rainy
Friday in Rock Rapids, it was time to start the double-header of the
O’Reilly All Star Circuit of Champions at the “Home of the
Professionals,” Huset’s Speedway.
Dobmeier qualified 10th
quick with a 10.903 out of the 27 cars which put him on the inside of
the third row to start out the 8 lap heat race in which he was able
to hold his position to make the transfer into the main event and
shoot for that 5 large.
Dobmeier came from 8th
to 6th with his underpowered machine until the power
steering line blew forcing the Senske & Son Delta Oil #13 into
the pits around lap 15. The team later found out that a broken
lifter is what caused the motor to act sub-par.
“At the start of the
main, I noticed that the motor was underpowered,” explains
Dobmeier. But I was able to make it up two spots until the
power steering line blew and shot fluid all over the steering wheel.”
Night two of the
O’Reilly All Stars was the big one, the $10,000 to win “Event of the
Season.” The track was a little slower this particular night
then the last, as none of the 33 cars entered could break the 11
second mark throughout qualifying. Mark Dobmeier set an 11.33
time with the Senske & Son Delta Oil #13 which was 17th
fastest in the field.
He lined up on the
outside pole for the heat race in which he quickly grabbed the lead
at the drop of the green and led the 8-lap contest from flag to flag
and guaranteeing a starting position in the main.
The start of the main
was one of those starts in which every racer dreads. When
the green flag dropped, another racer in front of Mark (sitting on
the outside of row 8) hit the standing water at the bottom of the
track and slid in front of the #13 causing the car to turn right and
into the front stretch wall creating a near five car crash.
This incident took the front and rear ends out of the Senske &
Son Delta Oil #13 and forcing yet another disappointing DNF for Lunstra/Dobmeier
Motorsports.
“Weekend’s like these
are quite annoying,” says Mark. “But, when this sort of thing
does happen it really makes us sit back, do our homework and be that
much more prepared for the weekend to follow.”
