Bud Kaeding takes 5th at Iowa Speedway to extend Silver Crown Series point lead to 69 digits
By Gary Thomas
Newton, Iowa – August 2, 2009…In the midst of the busiest stretch of the USAC K&N Silver Crown Series season Campbell, CA's Bud Kaeding continued his consistent year this past Friday at the Iowa Speedway and brought home a fifth place finish in the 100 lap race.
The event on Friday marked the halfway point for the USAC Silver Crown Series and was billed as the Casey's General Stores Challenge. Kaeding went into it having finished among the top-five in three of the four events held so far this season and maintained a 42-point lead over nearest rival Tracy Hines.
A total of 20 Silver Crown entrants were on hand for the Friday event at the 7/8 mile paved Iowa Speedway and Kaeding clocked the sixth fastest lap in qualifying at the helm of the BK Motorsports, MPD Racing Products, MDR Machine No. 29. The 100 lap race was then completed entirely under green flag conditions and the two-time series champion tallied a fifth place finish at the checkered flag.
Kaeding's fourth top-five effort in five starts, coupled with Hines' problems during the race, has allowed the Campbell veteran to stretch his Silver Crown Series point lead to 69 markers with just five events remaining. "We just have to keep running like this and getting good finishes and I think this title is certainly in our reach," Kaeding said. "I have to thank my guys and our sponsors for getting us to this point and hopefully we can bring home another Silver Crown championship."
Kaeding will be in for a busy week upcoming as the USAC K&N Silver Crown Series competes in the Kasey Kahne Steel Palace Classic this Thursday at the Oswego Speedway in Oswego, New York. Following that event Kaeding will fly back home in time to return to California sprint car racing competition at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville. The event on Saturday will be sanctioned by the Golden State Challenge 410 Sprint Car Series and will be the penultimate event of the season for the traveling circuit.
Saturday's race will be the third GSC visit of the season to the Ocean Speedway bullring and Kaeding has scored finishes of second and fifth in the two prior appearances this year at the track with the series. "We're looking forward to running at our home track with GSC on Saturday," the 29 year-old said. "We were really fast there last time so hopefully we can improve one position this time and get another win this weekend."
