This is just a reminder to all sprint car drivers who plan on competing in the VRA/WCS/Bandit Grand Slam race at Santa Maria Speedway on Saturday, August 8, that you MUST RUN THE VRA 180 MUFFLERS, ASCS INTAKE GASKETS AND THE VRA HOOSIER RIGHT REAR TIRE FOR THIS RACE, NO EXCEPTIONS. Cars must weigh 1500 lbs with driver after the event. These are the rules for this event as they were for the two preceding events in the series at Ventura and Bakersfield. Line-ups will be set by pill pick as at the two earlier events. We will not be qualifying on the 8th. Left rear tires can be Hoosier RC-1 or D12 only. No D-10 or DR12 tires allowed. Front tires can be any sprint car type front tires.
We are looking forward to an exciting night of racing. So far the two preceding events were exciting and competitive between the groups competing. very good car counts were at each preceding event and we expect this to be the case on the 8th. Currently Johnathon Henry leads Davey Pombo by 6 points after two events. Kevin Kierce, Troy Rutherford and Dan Gansen round out the top five. Henry won the first race at Ventura and Pombo won the second race at Bakersfield.
The race will pay $2,000 to win and $200 to start. 22 cars will start the feature event that will run 30 laps.
For more information call us at Ventura Raceway at 805-985-5433x115 from 4-5:30 if you want to talk to me, or call any time and leave a message and I will try to get back to you. We will not be in the office on Wednesday the 5 or Thursday the 6 due to our racing at the Ventura County Fair. We hope to see you at the track on Saturday August 8th.

I sure hope that next year the 180 degree mufflers are left out of the deal when they race at Santa Maria. Its been so nice to hear the WCS sound like real sprint cars this year. I dont see what the problem is with allowing the teams a choice. I figured teams from Ventura would relish the opportunity to let those motors sing a little. Bummer deal... This is just my opinion and I am definitely not trying to stir any crap but for a fan in the stands the 180 degree mufflers just dont excite me at all.
Also from this fans perspective... pill picks for position in the heats...I dont like it all. Here we gather all this talent together and yet we dont get to see how they match up throughout a "full" program. I am a traditionalist when it comes to race formats and I really enjoy qualifying, shoot I enjoy hot laps too. Yeah I know sometimes you get lucky and a good mixup occurs in the heats with the pill pick providing some good action but to me a traditional full featured show is best.
Am I alone on these points??

Just a reminder pits open at one, but they often let you in earlier and sweep the pits at 12:45. Looking forward to a great event!

Dean, I agree with you. But, I think the tire and muffler rules are for the VRA guys(and Hobie) to not have to buy extra tires/mufflers just to be even with the WCS's. And you know why Ventura doesn't qualify.
So my advise would be to let Mr. morgan know how you feel and vote on next years rules.
I too would like to see them qualify instead of a pill draw.
Cover your beer, the race is on!

I'm with you, Matt. Qualifying at Santa Maria can be very entertaining and gives you an idea what the track is going to be like.
Just hope I don't live long enough to see starters on sprint cars.

But isn't the reverse true, Flash? All the other teams are forced to buy Ventura tires and mufflers.
Not trying to make waves, but I was told by a very competitive team that some good teams didn't show for Ventura because they didn't have the tires.

No time to qualify! Gotta get the cart races out! Gotta get all those other classes out. No time for seniors, yellow or red flags, dwarfs or midgets. Ventura has a need to split up the program to Friday and Saturday nights. Think about it Cliff.

VRA teams have had to buy tires etc every other year, and everyone still whined about everything. I like qualifying, I like an even playing field.
Last time they qualified a grand slam at SMS the main was pushing off at almost midnight...
I think you will see a good race even with all these issues everyone is talking about. I do not think I am going to be able to attend which really disappoints me because all I hear about the track this season is positive.
Maybe we should focus on the positives?

I can't make it either, but Buzzard may be right. Maybe next year. One thing for certain it will be a very good race, with great drivers at a great new race track. Good luck to everyone.

Hey I just want to make sure everyone knows I am really excited about this event and want nothing but for it to be a success. I just wanted to express my feelings as a longtime sprint car fan with regards to the mufflers and qualifying. This race will be a great event so I hope anyone who can make it here comes on out. The dry-rubberdown track prep that was the norm during grand slam events at SMS in the past few years are just that, a thing of the past. Expect multi groove tacky goodness. :-)

I have an idea. All the drivers that want to qualify, just ask to do so. If it is voted on at the drivers meeting, then you might get it to fly. I'm sure Mr. Kearns will let you. Just not sure if Cliff would go for it.
Or the first sprinter thru the gate take a petition of all other teams and see if you are all on the same page. I know most of the VRA drivers would love to qualify.
See you on Saturday. I'll be there scraping some of that tacky goodness.
