By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA – July 30, 2009…As the Silver Dollar Speedway point season winds down Chico, CA's Jimmy Pettit scored a third place finish in the main event this past Saturday night during the wingless sprint car portion of the 26th annual Tribute to Gary Patterson.
The third place result allowed Pettit to extend his point lead in the Joe Hunt Magnetos/Feather Falls Casino point chase with just four wingless events remaining in the season. "It was a good run for us and we had the car pretty solid in the main event," said the driver of the Skyway Tools, Kevin Sharrah Designs, Esplanade Taco Bell No. 24 sprinter. "The track was racy tonight so that made it fun to run on and I think if we would have started a row further up we would have had a shot at getting back in victory lane."
This past Saturday's event marked the 26th annual Tribute to Gary Patterson and was held in conjunction with the traveling Golden State Challenge 410 Sprint Car Series. Pettit came into the night holding a 20 point lead in the wingless sprint car standings at the Silver Dollar Speedway and he kicked it off by scoring a third place finish in his heat race. "The Love-shack" then started from the fifth position in the main event and spent much of it hounding the rear of Cody Smith, before making the pass late in the going to claim third at the checkered flag.
After the night of competition Pettit was able to extend his point lead to 23 markers over Grass Valley's Jay Youngman with just four events remaining in the Hunt Magnetos season. This coming Friday will be an off night for the wingless division, before resuming action on August 7 during Miller Glass Night. "We have to just keep this car running up front consistently and we'll be alright during these last few events," Pettit commented. "We definitely want to get a win or two by the end of the season though so we'll be focusing on that over this last month."
