Decker snaps winless streak with victory

By Cheryl Licklider, Commentary

Todd Decker ended his two-year winless streak when he put his Godfather’s Pizza/Fat and Skinny’s/A&L Graphics-sponsored limited modified in the winner’s circle for the first time this season in racing action at Enid Speedway Park Saturday night.

“Bub was faster than me tonight, but I saw DeWayne Bohnstedt out here for the first time this year and I had to put on a show for the old man,” said Decker.

Landon Maddox hustled off the outside pole and led the first lap. Decker put his ride out front the second time around but had some tigers on his tail. Travis Johnson and Ross “Bub” McCartney were in a heated battle on Decker’s bumper when Jimmy Manharth spun to a halt and blocked the track, putting the track under caution in lap five.

Decker picked up where he left off when the race went green and had a clear advantage when Scott Parli spun to a halt in lap 10 and brought out another yellow flag. Decker resumed the point on the restart but McCartney was relentless. It was a drag race for several laps as the duo raced side by side.

The top side was a little quicker as McCartney took control and looked to be the man to beat. Two late race cautions tightened up the field, which saw Decker move into the hot seat on the white flag lap and win.

McCartney clung to second, followed by Landon Maddox, Kenny “The Iron Man” Morris and Ronnie Ramer.

Randy Timms was unstoppable as he broke the tape for the first time at the fairgrounds this season in the modified main event aboard his Western Flyer Express-sponsored Hughes chassis.

“The car was good and the track was fast,” said Timms.

Kip Hughes raced off the pole and showed the way. His run was short-lived as Alan Chickering made a daring outside challenge the second time around. But the man on the move was Timms, who used a low line to take command in lap four and set up more than a straightaway advantage by the race’s midpoint.

Undaunted by lapped traffic, Timms was not challenged en route to victory.

Kip Hughes, Chickering, Jon Herring Jr. and Dusty Robbins rounded out the top five in the race.

Persistence paid off for Tim Gardner as he piloted his Mine Company-sponsored street stock to his first win of the season.

“The crew did and awesome job on the car this week,” said Gardner. “I want to give a special thanks to Dan Healey.”

Derek King rushed away from the field and boasted a 10-car lead in a mere lap. Gardner marched through the field and steadily reeled in King.

A heated duel ensued at the race’s midpoint, with Gardner using a fast low line to take control in lap 15.

With a clear track in front of him, Gardner was unstoppable on his route to the winner’s circle. King, Ryan Bohnstedt and Travis King trailed at the finish.

John Whitley found track conditions to his liking as he piloted his Farmer’s Transportation/Homesbyowner.com-sponsored Chevy to his third feature win of the year.

“The track was pretty decent tonight and I enjoyed a good run,” said Whitley.

Defending factory stock champion Ronnie Ramer exploded off the outside pole and led the early laps of the fast and furious feature.

Whitley raced into contention and it was a drag race for several laps.

Whitley took command with a bold outside challenge in lap five and made his way to the finish line with a straightaway advantage. Ramer held onto second, trailed by Milt David and Terry Costello.

Mark Smith continued his reign over pure stock as he put his Rocket Radio/Mike Hoffman Photography-sponsored car in victory lane for the fifth time this season.

Pacesetter Michael Smith showed the way, but his luck ran out in lap eight when his brother, Mark, took the point and never looked back.

Michael Smith settled for second, trailed by James Goldman Jr., Korey Vendetti and Tyson Ashlock.

Hughes won his heat in modified.

Limited modified heat winners were Johnnie Raus-chenberg, Travis Johnson and McCartney.

Travis King won his heat in street stock.

Whitley won the factory stock heat, with Mark Smith taking the honors in pure stock.

Enid Speedway Park will host a doubleheader Friday and Saturday, featuring more than a $40,000 purse for modifieds and sport modifieds. Regular cards will be run in the other track divisions both nights.
