Surfnsprint to be at Fund Raiser

Popular auto racing journalist and sprint car supporter Mike Grosswendt will join sprint car driver Tony Jones, the Alexander Race Team and race fans on Sunday, August 16, at the team's third annual fund raiser at the Zanzabuku Sports Lounge in Lakewood, CA. It would be a great opportunity for race fans to talk to the author of the popular "Surfnsprint" racing column. Jones and the Alexander will also be on hand to answer any questions as well as do some bench racing.

Grosswendt describes his auto racing journal this way, "where the long point break waves of California Street meet the banked carving turns of Ventura Raceway, that is surfnsprint." In his weekly Internet Blog, Grosswendt covers auto racing in a unique and highly entertaining style. He is a huge supporter of the newly renovated Ventura Raceway and is a sponsor and race benefactor of "The Best Little Dirt Track in America."

An example of his efforts happens this Saturday night at Ventura, where the VRA sprint cars will be racing in round two of the All Coast Construction Challenge. The three-race mini series offers significant increases in money for each of the VRA sprint car events and separate series' points for more money in the special Challenge point fund. Grosswendt is the driving force behind this action-packed sprint car series. Race fans can catch up with Mike's latest news and photos at his popular website http://www.surfnsprint.com. He is also the co-owner of All Coast Construction that is based in Westlake Village and specializes in high end residential construction, renovation and maintenance.

August's fund raiser will include a raffle, 50/50 draw, free Taco Wagon, racing videos from Raceway Video and the cocktail lounge will feature happy hour prices all day long. The list of raffle prizes continues to grow as Steve Howard of So-Cal Hi-Performance will be donating t-shirts and decals and the book Living Where the Thunder Hides, documenting Jan Opperman's sprint car career, has also been added by the bar's owners to an already impressive list.

Other items include a color, framed print of Tony Jones in the Alexander sprint car by renowned Arizona artist Braden Wasson, a very rare and expensive issue of the first Open Wheel magazine, that features Tony's legendary father Bubby Jones on the cover, racing videos donated by Raceway Video's Jeff Kristensen and many other items. Please stay tuned for more details.

Everything begins around 12 noon at the Zanzabuku Sports Lounge, 4825 Paramount Blvd., in Lakewood. All proceeds go to the Alexander Race Team.

Hall of Famer Jimmy Oskie will be at Alexander and Jones Fund Raiser

Lakewood, CA. Five-time CRA Champion and National Sprint Car Hall of Fame inductee Jimmy Oskie will be in attendance on Sunday, August 16, at the Zanzabuku Sports Lounge when the Lakewood bar holds its third annual fund raiser for the Alexander Race Team and its driver Tony Jones.

Oskie, who is a true living legend of Ascot, captured California Racing Association Championships in 1969, 1974, 1976, 1977 and in 1979 and was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2000. The California native won his first race in 1968 and his last at Ascot Park in 1983. The former champion totaled 54 wins while racing throughout the state with the sprint car association. In the early 1970s he spent two summers campaigning with USAC in the Midwest driving sprint cars and championship dirt cars.

Oskie and fellow driver Steve Howard will be on hand August 16, as the Lakewood bar plans to honor both drivers by adding photographs of the two former drivers to the walls of the sprint car themed bar. Howard of course is another driver from the legendary days of Ascot winning three main events with CRA. His last win was on July 29, 1978 at Ascot. He gained nation-wide attention last season for his efforts in raising money from numerous sponsors in support of the Labor Day weekend, USAC/CRA race at Calistoga and the season-ending Glenn Howard Memorial, which honored his late father, at Perris Auto Speedway. Howard operates So-Cal Hi-Performance in Downey, CA.

Plans continue for the Lakewood bar's third annual fund raiser for Jones and the Alexander crew that include a free Taco Wagon, a 50/50 drawing, a raffle that features many racing related items and "happy hour" prices all afternoon. Also featured will be videos by Jeff Kristensen of Raceway Video on the bar's new 60" flat screen television. Jeff has also donated several videos to be given away during the afternoon raffle. Everything begins around 12 noon on Sunday, August 16.

The Zanzabuku Sports Lounge is located at 4825 Paramount Blvd. in Lakewood, CA.

More raffle items have been added for the Tony Jones and Alexander Race Team fund raiser scheduled for Sunday, August 16, at the team sponsored Zanzabuku Sports Lounge in Lakewood.

Scott Daloisio, Perris track announcer and owner of Scott Daloisio Sports & Historical Memorabilia, has donated a 1977 copy of the "Manzy Mag", which features the Western World Championship. This very rare collectable is packed with racing news from that era and features 1976 WW Champion Bubby Jones on the cover as well as Ron Shuman and Manzanita promoter Keith Hall. The program also has interesting features on Jones and Doug Wolfgang. The main event line-up, as well as the semi-main and consolation line-ups are typed in the program. The collector's item is in terrific condition and should receive much attention by racing fans. We would like to thank Scott for this generous contribution.

In addition, the bar is contributing two dynamic photos from Ventura Racing Association's newest photo contributor Christopher Eugster. Both photos feature the VRA sprint cars with a four wide shot coming out of turn two that is very impressive. Also impressive is the other photo which was a night shot of Ventura Speedway taken from somewhere high in the air above turn one. Both of these unique photos, especially the widely discussed four-wide photo, will be a part of the raffle.

Also, the owners will pay tribute to Jimmy Oskie and Steve Howard as they honor these former CRA drivers by adding action photos of both drivers, taken by legendary photographer Mike Arthur at Ascot Park, to the walls of the sports lounge.

And speaking of Ventura, we have already placed an order for Pabst Blue Ribbon (PBR) beer as per the request of some dedicated board posters. It will be on ice and at the right price. The Zanzabuku Sports Lounge is located at 4825 Paramount Blvd., Lakewood.

Just a short note here. Our fellow poster Grady Watkins has donated $100 toward the Tony Jones and Alexander Racing Team benefit scheduled for the Zanzabuku on Sunday, August 16. Thank you very much Grady, we are sure that Tony and the Alexander crew will be most appreciative! Sprint car fans are the best! Smile

Maybe we can use this great event to convince the Alexanders', and Tony Jones, to make the haul up to the famed 1/2 mile. It sure would be great to see "The Cowboy" run up there.

Thanks Senor Ralphie. Not sure if Scott can make the fund-raiser. Hopefully, he will make it - what a great personality to have for our event. I will bill your credit card for Scott's PBR. Smile

Chad Hawkins and his wife spent a great deal of time talking to Tony after last Saturday's race at Perris. As you know the Hawkins are part of the team that organized last year's event and are out promoting this year's show even harder. It would be great to see Tony running the famed 1/2 mile this coming Labor Day, but I can't forsee it happening as the team is having money issues. That is my impression and I don't mean to speak for Tony or Mark Aledander. JMO. Thanks Troy for your interest and will make a point of seeing you up north.

Will there be any other sprint car personalities, besides the ones that were mentioned in the post above, at the Zanzabuku this coming weekend? I heard a rumor that VRA regular Kevin Kierce might show, is there any truth to that? With no USAC/CRA race scheduled anytime soon, it will be a great opportunity to watch some great racing videos while having a couple beers.
