Does anyone know and/or remember how long before the Outlaw shows at Bristol that they put the dirt down? I'm just wondering because Elko starts racing on Wednesday and as of Sunday the dirt wasn't down. I'm hoping that this event works out because of sheer dumb luck if nothing else, but can dirt that has been on a surface for less than 48 hours hold up to four nights of racing? I guess time will tell.

Found this:

Cars Test the Bristol Dirt: A few dirt late models showed up at Bristol Motor Speedway Thursday night to give the new track surface the acid test in preparation for the Hav-A-Tampa race June 2-3. See photos and the full story at SpeedVision by Laura Kreuzer(5-21-2000)

I'm sure somewhere they've successfully layered clay over asphalt/concrete... quite a few bad examples come to mind, though.

To me it's like putting clay in a vise... concrete/asphalt isn't going anywhere and the sprint cars pound the clay into the concrete/asphalt. Recipe for hard packed, dry, rubber down racing.

The Chili Bowl would be a point of reference for your "how long" questions. There are quite a few sets of pics of them building the track online, some possibly have explanations with time/date stamps.

The Kansas City indoor midget show is another example; I saw quite a few pics of that track setup online.

Yes, the tracks I'm mentioning are different sizes undoubtedly... but a good point of reference.

It's hard enough to put a good racing surface together for a track that is clay all year round. Throwing clay on an asphalt track... 1st time out... ouch.

Good luck to them... hopefully it works out A-OK. When in doubt... add water. Lots of intermissions with track prep. Etc.

Just a note: You can find the TNN coverage of the 2000 Bristol Race on YouTube.

Elko photo probably taken earlier today. I base that on the fact that they raced Saturday and this is the first day the sun has been out up here for amost an entire a week. We've got rain moving through tonight to continue through part of the day tomorrow so I hope they didn't cut their track building too close. I'm going to drive into work Wednesday in downtown St. Paul so I'll be at the track by around 4:30pm and we'll see how things look. Outside of the indoor Sandbox Arena I have never seen a race on a dirt covered asphalt track so I'm going to keep an open mind about the deal. My first thought was that a Sprint Car could get over those backstretch signs and outa the park pretty easy so I hope it's not too cluttered back there. My second thought was that it looks pretty wide and that's how I remember it from when we were recording the Race Show studio segments out there. My third thought was that I don't see a porta john but there's no seating on the backstretch so we'll be alright if push comes to shove. wink

Don't forget that they have a concert venue out there and will be having free concerts each night after the races.

7:45pm Monday night and I just got off the phone with someone who is out at Elko watching John Sernett turn some practice laps. He says the track is very good and that they used a clay that has produced a great racing surface. There are a couple dips they're working on but he said the track is going to be excellent and as a former wiinng car owner he knows what he's talking about.

pit gate opens at 2:30

spectator gate opens at 5pm

qualifying at 6:30pm and racing gets underway at 7pm.
