Jimmy Pettit scores top five in first race back at Silver Dollar Speedway since Memorial Day weekend

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – July 6, 2009…Making his first start since late May Chico, CA's Jimmy Pettit raced to a top five finish on Friday night at the Silver Dollar Speedway to maintain his spot atop the Hunt Magnetos wingless sprint car standings.

The event on Friday was the first time the wingless sprints have hit the Silver Dollar Speedway clay since Memorial Day weekend and many were ready to finally get back into the swing of things and continue the chase for the Hunt Magnetos wingless title.

A 15 car wingless field came out for the night of racing and Pettit started out the evening by finishing fourth in his heat race with no power steering after the steering box seal broke on the second lap. "When it broke we lost all the fluid over me and made it tough to hang on and finish the heat," Pettit said.

Following the heat race the team changed steering boxes and the Kevin Sharrah Designs, Pep Boys, Esplanade Taco Bell No. 24p machine was set to start the 20 lap feature from the inside of the fifth row. "The Love-shack" was on the move right from the get go and charged up into fifth by passing a pair of cars on lap three, but a yellow flag negated the pass and forced him to go back to seventh.

The Silver Dollar Speedway surface was hooked-up as usual on Friday night and made for some exciting action in the main event. Pettit would move into sixth on the fourth circuit and then slice his way into fifth on lap six. The Chico racer then put pressure on fourth place running Jay Youngman over the remaining laps, but couldn't get the momentum he needed to make the pass and settled for a fifth place finish at the checkered flag.

Pettit was happy with the run and was just glad to be back racing after the long layoff. "We had a nice run in the main event and definitely think we could have run in the top three if we would have started a little further up front," said Pettit. "It felt good to finally get back behind the wheel because it seems like it had been forever since we raced here. I want to thank my crew chief "Captain Ron" and all our sponsors who are supporting us this year and hopefully we can get them a win this coming weekend."

The next event for Jimmy Pettit and the No. 24p sprinter will be this Friday's Feather Falls Casino Point Race 13 sponsored by Withrow's Motorsports and JP's Paint & Body Works. "The Love-shack" will bring a 14 point lead in the Silver Dollar Speedway wingless point standings into the night as he searches for his second win of the year.
