Bud Kaeding finishes 9th with Silver Crown Series in Richmond/ Headin’ to Chico for 4th of July weekend
By Gary Thomas
Richmond, Virginia – June 29, 2009…Two-time USAC K&N Silver Crown champion Bud Kaeding brought home a ninth place finish in Saturday’s “James River Grounds 100” at the Richmond International Raceway and was able to maintain his current spot atop the series standings as he searches for his third career title with touring club.
In the two events so far this season with the USAC Silver Crown Series Kaeding had won the season opener in Arizona and also tallied a fourth place finish at the Hoosier Hundred in Indiana to give him a 24 point advantage in the standings going into Richmond this past weekend.
The event at the ¾ mile paved oval featured a strong 24 car field in action for Saturday evenings 100 lap race and Kaeding began the weekend by qualifying fourth fastest on Friday aboard the BK Motorsports, MPD Racing Products, K&N Filters, High Five Pizza No. 29. Starting in the second row the veteran driver fought hard for the duration of the 100 lapper and brought home a ninth place finish at the checkered flag, in what was the first pavement race of the Silver Crown season.
It also marked Kaeding’s first pavement outing of the year and the ninth place result gives him a 21 point lead in the new series standings over Tony Stewart Racing driver Tracy Hines. “We would have liked to finish a little higher, but this was a great field of drivers so we’ll take a top 10 and try to keep getting these consistent finishes with the Silver Crown car to stay in the points lead,” Kaeding said. The USAC Silver Crown Series will now be off until an event at the O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 23.
Kaeding will now head home and climb back behind the wheel of the BK Motorsports No. 29 Winged 410 Sprint Car for a special 4th of July weekend double-header at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. The Campbell, CA driver had a strong July 4th weekend last year at the quarter-mile bullring and brought home finishes of second and fourth during the two nights of racing.
This Friday’s event will mark Kaeding’s first start of the season in the Feather Falls Casino 410 Championship Series at the Silver Dollar Speedway and he goes into it following a third place finish at the 38th Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup, in what was his most recent race in the No. 29 sprinter. Then on Saturday the Golden State Challenge King of California Series will invade the SDS clay for the second time this season and will it mark Round 17 for the traveling 410 tour.
The lone GSC event so far this year in Chico was the Dave Bradway Jr. Memorial in May and it saw Kaeding tally a seventh place finish in the main event after starting last on the grid. He’ll come into this weekend with momentum on his side following five straight top-five finishes in his last five outings with the Golden State Challenge Series. “We’ve had this car running really good lately and hopefully it’ll continue this weekend and maybe we can get a win in Chico,” Kaeding commented.
