Press Release by Jim Pluhar

Santa Maria, CA 6-10-09...Open wheel racing will be the order-of-the-day Saturday at Santa Maria Speedway. USAC/CRA Non-Winged 410 Sprint Cars, NMRA TQ Midgets and California Lightning Sprints will all be on hand for the 5th Annual Ron Otto Memorial. It has just been learned that MMI Factory Stocks will race as well, in a non-points run that will also be open to all Hobby Stocks as-long-as they run a 7" tire.

*Blake Miller, of Yorba Linda, leads the 410 championship by a scant 4 points over over Riverside's David Cardey. Mike Spencer, of Temecula, is 33 points behind the leader, followed by Garrett Hansen, of Manhattan Beach, who is 38 markers out of the lead and local driver Danny Sheridan, of Santa Maria, trailing by 48.

*Newbury Park's Scott Dobson is 10 points up on Santa Maria Speedway May 2 feature winner Bruce Hiroshima and Richard Ortega, Jr. The two Camarillo drivers are tied for second while fourth place Anthony Lopiccolo, of Brea, is 24 points out of first and fifth place West Evans, of Moorpark, is 31 off the pace.

*Stuart Hielscher, Sr., of Murrieta, who won the California Lightning Sprint main event at the Speedway May 16, leads their point standings by only 14 markers over Ramona's A.J. Bender, with third place John Bluntach, of Rowland Heights, 51 points back. Murrieta's Stuart Hielscher, Jr. is minus 67 in fourth and Spring Valley's Jarrett Kramer trails by 127.

*Spectator gates for Saturday night's event will open at 3:00 p.m., with qualifying at 5:00 p.m. and racing at 6:00 p.m. Admission prices will be: $18.00 for adults, $16.00 for seniors & military, $5.00 for children 6 to 12, five and under free.

The Speedway is located 1/4-mile north of the 101/166 interchange on Hutton Road.

Trip. My brother is making the trophy for the Ron Otto as well. All billet aluminion. Anyway's good to see you are coming North into wanger and non-wanger country. See you at the track. I will be wearing my TK shirt, since he is truly one of the last of dying breed(wing and non-wing drivers) imo. See u at the track.
Trophy Cup......Best race of the year hands down!

The 410's at SMS should be one good show. I've been there once this year to see a race and really like that place. Way to go Mr. Kearns.

Showtime may get fast time. But the main will be The Kruser.

Cover your beer, the race is on!

TK is one of a dying breed and I enjoy watching him run without the barn door on top. Smile A check with the Santa Maria newspaper this morning and the weather forcast is for p.m. rain. Hope not. Look forward to running into you at the track. Will try and be topside out of turn four.

I live here in Santa Maria. It's not going to rain. There's just a bunch of high clouds. Trip my brother and I sit over in turn 4 so I will probably run into u. And yes TK is a badass, but if u are him u go run with the barndoors on, because it pays more......at least he and the Wild Child make it fun to watch IMO!!
Trophy Cup......Best race of the year hands down!

I will take your word for it Mr. Kearns. We hear nothing but good about Santa Maria this year so can't wait for the 410s. Its been awhile with the PAS on a limited schedule this year.

Does anybody have any news about car count, or who is fast, or anything else newsworthy? Who is there or who is not there?

Lance has the results posted on another thread, but it was a very good show. 23 sprint cars (I believe) and a bit of action between Showtime and Hansen in turn four before one lap was complete. They both started on the front row so we expected something to happen because of their history. I will wait for Jeff's video before giving an opinion, but Danny ended up on his head as their wheels touched. He was ok, but very, very angry afterward. He charged after Hansen and was stopped by track officials, but not before he fired off some @#$%%^&! words directed at young Garrett, who remained seated in his race car due to the red flag. I don't know how bad the Kittle race car was damaged and didn't want to ask later in the pits. After Hansen's win he was interviewed in the winner's circle by Doug Bushey and immediately accepted the blame for the incident. He apologized at least three times and was able to subside some of the chorus of boos from Sheridan's hometown fans. I for one appreciated his comments. Spencer ran a solid second with Cardey close. Blake Miller was involved in an incident early on and may have lost the points lead. He looked extremely fast.

It was our first trip to Santa Maria, though I have passed by on the freeway many times. The crowd was into the open wheel sprint cars and it was a pleasure being there. Mr. Kearns runs a very nice race track and we both left with a good impression of the fan-friendly facility. Track was good and every thing topside was clean. Good place for sprint cars! The track announcer was very good and of course Mr. Bushey conducted some solid interviews. We can't wait to go again. BTW, both Chase and Richard Vanderwerd were again impressive and we enjoyed meeting their folks in the pits afterwards. Home at 2:15 a.m.

Thank you for the nice report! Your comments about Doug Bushey and Chris Kearns are spot on. Doug is great for the USAC/CRA series and the sport in general. He's one heckuva nice guy to boot. Glad you had a great time!

Gary...you are too kind. Thanks for the support...it means a lot to me!

However, the real hero last night was Chris Kearns. I got to meet him for the first time last night. What a class act! Perfect show, great crowd, and an overall fun night. I want to thank every one of the SMS staff for all the help and generosity...it was a pleasure to help you guys out last night.
