Brandon Davis beats out strong Petaluma Speedway field for first win of season

By Gary Thomas

Petaluma, CA – June 7, 2009…With a solid field of 30 wingless sprint cars on hand at the Petaluma Speedway Rohnert Park's Brandon Davis held off all challengers and drove to his first victory of the 2009 racing season on Saturday night aboard the Dave Johnson owned No. 32 machine.

Davis, who won the Silver Dollar Speedway wingless sprint car championship in 2007, spent much of last season running a winged sprint car, but has come back this year to the wingless ranks on a more full-time basis driving for car owner Dave Johnson with sponsorship from Johnson Custom Machine, Hettrich Construction, Northbay Welding and Sparky's Collision Center.

Davis had put together a consistent season up till this point and was very happy to get into victory lane for the first time on Saturday night. "It feels great to finally get a win this year," Davis said. "It's been a pretty solid season for us, but we definitely wanted to get a victory and to get it tonight with this great field of cars here is pretty cool."

The 20 year-old racer was one of four drivers to break the existing wingless spec sprint track record to begin the night and started the feature from the front row. At the waving of the green flag he settled into second behind early leader Devon Ostheimer, but it didn't take him long to move into the top spot as he charged into the lead on lap three. The hooked-up 3/8 mile clay oval made for some tough conditions, but Davis was able to use the high line to pick his way through the slower lapped traffic.

The remaining circuits of the 20 lap feature saw Davis sit out front for the duration and hold off a strong late race challenge from Tracy's Matt Streeter to drive off and take his first checkered flag of the '09 season. "Devon got me on the start of the race and he went to the bottom going into turn one, so I just blasted the top and it worked pretty good so I stayed up there," said Davis, who also finished runner-up at Petaluma Speedway's "Run What You Brung" show last year. "The track was really fast and rough tonight, but we had the car working awesome so it made things a lot easier for me."

Davis this season has also been running at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico and currently sits fourth in the Joe Hunt Magnetos/Feather Falls Casino track standings. "I just have to thank my car owner Dave Johnson and the team for giving me the opportunity to come and run the car this season," Davis said. "I definitely think we're going to be in for a great rest of the year and just can't wait to get back on the track because I have a lot of confidence right now."

The wingless sprints will have an extended period of time off at the Silver Dollar Speedway however, before resuming action at the newly resurfaced track on Friday night July 3. Davis currently sits 20 points behind leader Jimmy Pettit as he searches for his second track title. "We've been fast in Chico this year, but have had a bit of bad luck so we're looking forward to getting back up there," commented Davis, who won six main events at SDS during his championship year in '07.

Williams brings home a winner in wingless sprints

Print E-mail
Written by Harlan Osborne

He may have had his fingers crossed hoping his race car had enough power to last the five final laps but Steven Williams found the third time was a charm as he raced to victory in Petaluma Speedway's third annual Run What You Brung for wingless 360 sprint cars last Saturday.

With his car losing power flashbacks of the previous two races crowded Williams' mind. In 2006 the Merced driver blew an engine and last year he barely held on to finish second but Saturday night the 25-year-old, who led the entire race, had enough power and finesse to make it to the finish and collect the $2500 winner's purse. "My motor started going sour with about five laps to go. I just kinda hung on to the bottom and hoped they didn't pass me up top," said Williams, who had reason to worry, with fast qualifier Brandon Davis nipping at his tail waiting for an opening.

Davis, an 18-year-old from Rohnert Park, topped the 26 entries in qualifying with a 14.639 clocking and was running third in the 22-car feature when Williams and runner-up Wes Gutierrez tagged a slower car on Lap 17. Gutierrez, one of the unlucky 13 cars that failed to finish, left the race and Davis began to pressure the leader but Williams held on to claim the triumph over Davis, who won $1500, Billy Aton, Eric Rossi, Shawn Arriaga, Geoff Ensign, Arvo Backholm, Randy Lathrop, and Kirk Simpson.

Arriaga captured the 12-lap B-main and got back his starting spot in the feature where he finished fifth and pocketed $500. Also transferring to the feature were second place Jack Clark, Geoff Ensign, David Press, Scott Dupont, Ford Cook, and Mike Mossi. Aton, running just a two-barrel carb, collected $1000 for finishing third and a $300 bonus for being the top finishing carbureted car.

Heat race wins went to Santa Rosa drivers Kirk Simpson and Arvo Backholm, and Petaluma's Norm Johns.

Gilroy's Gilbert Toste enjoyed a perfect evening in the dwarf car portion of the program making a clean sweep of his heat, the trophy dash, and the 22-car, 25-lap feature, which he led from start to finish. Robert Mesloh, who took over second place after Mark Biscardi broke on Lap 18, challenged Toste over the final seven laps but Toste held on to gain the victory over Mesloh, Robert Atencio, David Teves, Mark Tillinger, Sonny Calkins, Dan Williams, John Barker, Richard Klinetobe, and Marty Weisler.

In the mini stocks Jon Kirby followed his heat race victory with a wire-to-wire triumph in the feature. Kirby bolted from sixth-starting to take the lead on the first lap and never looked back as he notched his third win of the season over Kenny Drew, Tim LaRose, Larry Drew, Stan Devore, Duarte Machado, Michael Drew, Erica Reid, and Kimberly Hartman.

This Saturday night Petaluma Speedway will host its ninth annual $3500-to-win Top Dog Nationals for the dirt modifieds along with the wingless spec sprints.

So why the mix up in the press release? Williams from the track, Davis from the PR.

I found that out just a few seconds ago.

This is what it says from this past weekend's recap on the Petaluma site-

"Davis, who won the Speedway’s Run What You Brung open show last season found his line up high and was never seriously challenged although fifth-starting Matt Streeter."

I edited the story to be correct now.

I'm following now.

I thought the wrong ARTICLE was posted as opposed to wrong INFORMATION within the article. Yeah, Williams definitely won the Run What You Brung race last year.

Ron

EDIT: fixed
