2 nights ago at Grandview we were talking about the All Stars in WV this weekend and I wrongly assumed that they were at the beautiful West Virginia Motor Speedway. Instead they're at Elkridge.

I had asked a few folks if they had ever been there & even said to Qman that we will have to take a trip down there sometime, since he was never there.

The conversation brought back fond memories of the mid '90's traveling to the track in Mineral Wells with J&J Shaver, Pork, Groundhog, Jimmy etc....watching the STARS Late Models quite a few times, the Outlaws and even a NASCAR night with Rusty Wallace on hand. I can still picture the beautiful terraced frontstretch area for lawn chairs and it was the first track I had ever seen with a sprinkler system to water the track built into the wall.

At the Outlaw show I remember Steve Beitler there....Lance in the #461 and Lenny Krautheim was running Weikerts #29 that still had one of Wolfgang's old motors under the hood.

Some of the fond memories even occured in downtown Parkersburg after the races. "Sugars" anyone?

I guess I fell to out of touch with the place as I was deeply saddened today when I was "Googling" to find out information. I couldn't believe it when I read that the place has sat idle since 2007 with no racing. I found some information on ohiovalleydtr.com. It seems the current owner is a real estate developer and has lost interest in promoting the place. It appears that WVMS needs some clay, a revamped sewer system and a big draw back is access to the track through the one-lane tunnel under I-77 with the new larger haulers being used these days.

I sure hope someone out there can find a way to buy or lease the 5/8th mile and make it work. I would love to go back there for a race some day.
