GLR Investments Sprint Cars Ready To battle it Out in Round No. 5

By Gary Costa

Watsonville, CA – June 2, 2009….The powerful GLR Investments 360 Winged Sprint Car Series will be ripping into John Prentice's Ocean Speedway ¼-mile surface this Friday, June 5th. The races that have been held thus far have been wild and exciting.

The last event that was held at the speedway on May 15th was a sight to behold as Easton's Tommy Tarlton won the exciting event in dramatic fashion charging from his sixth starting spot. Tarlton's win coupled with some of the top drivers in the points chase occurring problems, really shook up the points.

Tarlton became the fourth different winner in four events contested. Campbell's Brent Kaeding was the opening round winner; Grass Valley's Jason Statler won Round No. 2, and Prudale's Justin Sanders took Round No. 3.

In Round No. 4 BK was the point's leader going into the event. However a tenth place finish would relegate the BK Motorsports No. 69 into second place in the standings, and a new point's leader would emerge. With his flawless consistency Scott's Valley hot shoe Evan Suggs would take the point in the Suggs Racing No. 33E.

Suggs' consistency has been astonishing to say the least. In the four events that the fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student has competed in, he has managed to rack-up two fourth place finishes and two second place finishes. In addition, he doesn't get 'shaky' when he's challenging the clock.

"It feels good being the point's leader. With the amount of talented drivers in the series that's saying something," the humble Suggs said. "Being in the lead makes me feel real confident. Right now I feel real comfortable in the car, but I would like to turn some of those seconds and fourths into wins (laughs). It's far from over yet, but I'm going to go out there and give it my all."

BK will not be content with sitting a mere 10-points behind Suggs. You can be sure that the Hall of Famer will come loaded for bear heading into this event, as he will be definitely be looking to redeem himself from his uncharacteristic tenth place finish.

Round No. 3 winner, Justin Sanders moved into third in the Sanders Motorsports No. 17. The ultra-talented 17-year-old has been another consistent racer. He has finished sixth, fifth, and of course his big Round 3 win. His only blemish came in the opening round of competition where he finished 12th. After that hiccup he has been running up front ever since and hasn't looked back. Sanders is only 12 points away from the point's leader and only two points away from BK.

Tommy Tarlton has had some bad luck at the speedway, but he put it all together by winning the last GLR event in the Tarlton & Son, Inc., No. 21. Tarlton was quickly dropping down in the standings and out of a chance for the championship. With his win he has managed to put himself back into contention. He is only 20 points away from Suggs and eight back from Sanders.

Bud Kaeding will relinquish his fifth place in the point's standings. The San Jose driver will be in competition with the USAC National Sprint Car Series in its "East Coast Swing" in Pennsylvania.

Sitting in sixth and ready to strike is San Martin's Craig Smith. Smith will be looking to capitalize on Bud's absence. The racy veteran is always ready to "get after it". Look for the pilot of Taco Bravo No. 39 to put on a show for the fans and make a jump in the standings.

A host of other drivers seeking the Round No. 5 win include Salinas' Ronnie Day, Santa Cruz's Kevin Pylant, Salinas' Keith Day, San Jose's Matt Sargent, Pleasanton's Brad Furr, Cupertino's Steve Osborne, Fresno's Mike Stallings, Morgan Hills Ricky Wright, Jr., Visalia's Cory Eliason, Gilroy's Kurt Nelson, Fremont's Jason Newton and more.
