Andy Gregg & Guts Racing score second career Golden State Challenge Series podium Saturday night in Placerville

By Gary Thomas

Placerville, CA – June 2, 2009…Returning to Golden State Challenge competition this past weekend Team Guts Racing's Andy Gregg drove to his second career podium finish with the traveling 410 sprint car series at his home track of Placerville Speedway on Saturday night.

The podium finish marked Gregg's third result of fourth or better in four starts with the Golden State Challenge King of California Series this season. "I want to get a win real bad with these guys, but I'm happy to get another top three finish in front of our hometown crowd," Gregg said. "Tonight is my crew chief Bill Mclaren's birthday and last night was my wife Lynde's birthday so it's cool to get a good finish for them."

The night got started off on a good note as Gregg qualified the Guts Racing, Dale Miller Plumbing, Myers & Sons Drywall No. 16x solidly in the fifth position and then brought home a third place finish in the nights second heat race. He then drew the number three pill for the dash and finished in that position to give himself an inside row two starting spot for the feature.

The 30 lap main event saw Gregg hang tough in third for much of the going, but late in the race he would lose a spot to a hard-charging Jonathan Allard. The Placerville racer remained composed though and as the laps wound down would execute a slider on current USAC Silver Crown Series point leader Bud Kaeding to steal away the third position in exciting fashion.

Gregg would drive off to cross under the checkered flag in third to pick up his third top five of the season with the Golden State Challenge 410 Sprint Car Series. "I just have to thank all you fans for coming out here and supporting us tonight because it's cool to see these stands packed like this," said Gregg, who also finished third in the only other GSC event at Placerville this season. "During the first race here we sat on the podium with Brent Kaeding & Jason Statler and tonight we're on here with Tyler Walker & Jonathan Allard and it doesn't get much better than that. It's really an honor to be up here with guys like this."

The '04 GSC Rookie of the Year was also in action with the series on Friday night for the first time this season at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, where he started off the evening by timing-in second fastest in the field aboard the Roughcut Construction, RPS Performance, JLR Drafting No. 16x. In the main event he started from the fourth row and was running in seventh early on, until another driver got into the back of him and resulted in Gregg spinning out in turn four. He restarted, but slowed shortly thereafter to put an end to the night.

Gregg and the Guts Racing team will be right back in action on Wednesday night at the Placerville Speedway for the California Sprint Car Civil War Series sanctioned Wild Winged Wednesday. "We're looking forward to Wednesday night because it's always fun to have a race mid-week," the 29 year-old said. "We've had a great start to the year and hopefully we can parlay it into a win on Wednesday."
