Watsonville, Ca. (April 25, 2009) – Tommy Tarlton competed in round five with the Golden State Challenge Sprint Car Series at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville. Tommy's last visit with the GSC came at Tulare, where it brought him a seventh place finish.
Tarlton put on a driving clinic finishing eighth the previous weekend at Ocean Speedway, coming from the back of the pack, after being caught up in a wreck on lap 3 in GLR Investments 360 Sprint Car action.
Tommy, who is a great qualifier, got behind "the 8-ball". Tommy took the Tarlton & Son, Inc., No. 21 around the speedway, timing in with an uncharacteristic 14th quick, turning a 12.414 lap. "No excuses, we just missed the setup," Tarlton said. "We got behind, but we didn't give up and worked on the car all through the evening."
In Heat No. 2, Tommy finished fifth in his heat race. By missing the dash, he had to start in the 14th position on the grid. When the green flew, Tarlton didn't hesitate from his seventh row starting spot. Tommy was up on the wheel chasing down cars, and drove under the checkered flag for a hard fought seventh place finish.
"During the main event, we got better and better," he said. "We got moving and started picking off cars one by one. I got held up in lapped traffic. I think if I would have got past them earlier, I may have been able to move forward some more."
