Brian Brown – I-80 to I-30!

(Bill W) April 15, 2009 – Brian Brown is accustomed to winning at the I-80 Speedway, but he had to settle for two solid finishes last weekend. Either way, it was better than the previous week where he ended up on his lid. This week he'll head to the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Arkansas where he will compete with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series.

The Grain Valley, Missouri driver saw a couple of ways a pill draw can sting you at I-80, which saw fields of 44 and 46 cars. "Sometimes the pill draw helps, and sometimes it hurts," he says. "It seemed to me we were on the wrong side of the draw both nights. The first night we drew in the back of a pretty tough heat, and the second night we drew the pole of the fifth heat, where the best case scenario is to have the fifth most points."

Competitors in Brian's Friday ASCS-Midwest/Northern Plains heat included Don Droud Jr., Billy Alley and Shawn Van Wyhe. He drove the SuperClean #21 from seventh to fourth. "There just wasn't a lot of passing in the heats on Friday night," he says. "We were lucky to pass a few cars there and finish right behind Billy."

The finish put Brian on the pole of the B main, which he won. "Running the B wasn't a bad thing at all," he explains. "We tried some things for the feature that ended up helping us. We kept our heads up as a team after our heat, and kept plugging away."

It took less than a lap to figure out that the fastest cars on the track were Alley and Brown, who started 12th and 14th, respectively. The 25-lap contest went non-stop with Alley prevailing over Brown in the end. "It was definitely fast with the rain they received the day before," says Brian. "We had a good car to get through there like that. I don't know if we could have beat him (Alley) or not, but I would have liked to have seen a yellow flag to find out."

Brian's respect for Alley is evident. "Billy did a great job coming out for the first night," he says. "To win from 12th on that heavy a track is no small thing. My hat's off to their team. They had a great crowd that stuck out the cold and they had to enjoy the good racing we were putting on."

Brian's pole spot on Saturday night resulted in winning the fifth heat. "We were able to win our heat, but with the system, we were still 11th out of the 12 cars that were locked in by points," he says. "That's where a good draw can bite you. If I was one spot worse, I would have been outside row one of the first heat, which is about the best you can hope for."

Looking at the quickly drying track, Brian knew a one-lane track was coming. "It was on the verge of taking rubber in the heat races, so I knew starting that far back would be tough," he says. "I had the car a little tighter than I anticipated. If it was the way it should have been set up, I should have been in the top two or three after a few laps."

Instead, starting eleventh, Brian ran sixth in the end. "We just kind of got in line there after ten laps or so, and ran sixth," he says. "It's disappointing to go to I-80 and not win, but overall, it was much better than the week prior, where we tore the car up. Our work load won't be near as big this week getting ready for Little Rock."

Brian has high praise for Saturday's feature winner, Jonathan Cornell from Sedalia, Missouri. "Jonathan did a great job," he says. "That's a huge win for their team. He's a good young driver, and I look for big things from him this year at Knoxville."

Circumstances in Little Rock will be a little different for Brian. "It will be the first time we've been there that it hasn't been the Short Track Nationals," he says. "The forecast is 80 degrees, so we may be looking at something we haven't seen before down there. The track doesn't seem to fit my driving style, but we always seem to do well there. I'm looking forward to it."

Brian's Q&A

Rachel in Sedalia, MO asks: At what point did you know you were going to drive a racecar?

Brian answers: I always wanted to drive a racecar. At six years old, I dressed as a racecar driver for career day. That was always my ultimate goal, but I didn't even race one until I was 20 or 21. That was a late start, and I started in the sprint cars. That's really all I've ever run. I always wanted to do it, I just never knew when I would do it. When you do well, you want to win, when you win, you want to win championships and when you do that you want to continue that. I've been very lucky to be able to do this. A bad day at this, is better than a good day at a job any day.

That is a "super" looking car. Love the color, will stand out in the lights. Nice camera shot too.

Adding $6 trillion of debt in his 1st term and now if
elected again he wouldn't have to worry about an
electorate in 2016 so the sky is the limit. And his EPA
would continue to put the screws to oil drilling and
mining for coal. Can you say bankruptcy.
