This is from Bill Sullivan: Kyle Hirst takes Civil War Series Opener in Petaluma Official Media Release, Handy Racing Promotions Inc. PETALUMA, CA – A total of 38 cars turned out for the 2009 for competitive Hoosier Racing Tires Civil War Sprint Car Series opener at the lighting fast 3/8 mile Petaluma Speedway Saturday night. At the conclusion of the evening, Loomis resident Kyle Hirst became the first series winner of the season. Driving the GP Development #6 sprint car, Hirst started the 30 lap feature event on the outside of the front row and wasted little time in charging ahead of pole sitter Stephen Allard of Chico. Once he was in the front of the field, Hirst drove a flawless 30-lap race, holding off a hard charging Sean Becker, the defending series champion, in lapped traffic. “It was not very easy but my crew gave us a great car tonight and there was room to pass,” said Hirst. “Sean gave us a heck of a race. It seems like he wins every time here. Becker closed in on Hirst in lapped traffic and at one point, passed for lead only to watch Hirst use the same lapped traffic to regain the top position. Earlier in the evening, Becker clocked the fastest time in qualifying it a 12:952 second lap. “We got into lapped traffic, that’s the best part about this place, lapped traffic always plays a part,” said Becker. “We’re happy with our run tonight, its hard to be disappointed when you’re having so much fun.” Hirst and Becker were followed across the line on Saturday by Allard, Placerville’s Jimmy Trulli finished in fourth with Herman Klein of Sacramento rounding out the top five. In preliminary action Saturday, Willie Croft of Sacramento won the opening heat race. Matt Sargent won heat race number two. The third heat race was claimed by Camron Mendes of Rohnert Park. Shain Matthews won the fourth heat race of the night. Luke Dollansky claimed the C-main event over Jack Haulot, Pat Harvey and Kenny Allen. The B-feature was claimed by Trullie followed by Steven Tiner, Mason Moore, Chad Compton and Richard Bailey. The next Civil War Series event will be the Annual Tribute to Al Hinds event at Placerville Speedway sponsored by Family Chevrolet on May 2. At this time, Family Chevrolet is seeking attendees for the pre-event car show and barbecue that will take place prior the race on the same day. The event will feature live music and extensive media coverage this year and nearly 20 sprint cars are needed for display. Those who are interested in assisting with this promotion can contact Bill Sullivan of Handy Racing Promotions Inc. at [email protected]. Additonal information and complete results for Saturday’s event at Petaluma Speedway can be found at www.civilwarsprints.com.
