Tarlton Has Uncharacteristic Night at GLR 360 Opener

By Gary Costa

Watsonville, Ca. (April 3, 2009) – The Tarlton Motorsports hauler would point towards Watsonville and look to do battle in Round No. 1 GLR 360 Sprint Car Series, however Tommy Tarlton and the crew had a night that they would soon like to forget.

After coming in from hot laps, the team immediately went to work on a left front brake problem. Crew chief Paul Baines led the team in trying to get the problem fixed as time was running out for Tommy’s upcoming qualifying run.

Out on the race track, the brake problem continued and proceeded to try to plague Tommy’s qualifying run in the Tarlton & Son, Inc., Tachi Palace Hotel & Casino, Shark powered Maxim No. 21. He managed to turn an impressive 12.205, good enough for 2nd quick.

“I didn’t have brakes,” said Tarlton. “It wasn’t fun out there without any brakes. When the corners were coming up, I picked a spot on the race track and I just had to pitch the car sideways a bit to slow me down.”

In Heat 2, Tommy and Brent Kaeding would put on a show for the fans, as they would run each other hard and clean. Tommy would eventually settle in for a 3rd place finish.

In the main event action, Tarlton was looking good and quickly moving forward. On the 10th lap however, Tommy was trying to take over the 4th spot, but contact ensued with another car, leaving Tarlton parked vulnerable on the front straightaway. While facing the wrong direction, another car clipped the front portion of the car. He went to the work area, where the team ripped the damaged front wing off of the car.

Tommy would have to go to the back of the pack. When the green flew again, Tommy was doing all that he could despite losing front down force on the front end, due to missing front wing. While again making progress, disaster struck again on lap 15, as another mishap would occur, which ended Tommy’s evening.

“No excuses, it was just one of those nights. We only had one DNF last year, and this year, we’ve already had two. We’ll just regroup and go after them again in Tulare (GSC). With this caliber of drivers, you can’t afford to have a DNF.”
