ASCS Southwest Region Makes One Last Manzy Stop!

Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (March 30, 2009) – The pages in Manzanita Speedway's history books have nearly been depleted, with just two more weekends of racing atop the fabled Phoenix clay oval. Winged Sprint Cars will take to Manzanita's 1/3-mile for the final time this Saturday night as the ASCS Southwest Region makes its final appearance at the storied racetrack.

The non-wing Discount Tire Co. ASCS Canyon Region will bring the curtain down on Manzanita Speedway with the Donnie Davis Memorial atop the ½-mile the following Saturday night, April 11.

The ASCS Southwest Region kicked off the season on March 14 with Albuquerque's Johnny Herrera besting a stout field of 33 entries at Tucson's USA Raceway. With that win, Herrera is out to the early points lead ahead of El Paso's John Carney II and defending series champion Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces.

Wingless ace Charles Davis, Jr., who is expected to vie for both the Canyon and Southwest Region championships this year, finished fifth in the Southwest season opener. "Chargin' Charles" also took over the ASCS Canyon Region points lead by winning the final wingless Sprint Car feature atop Manzanita's 1/3-mile on March 21.

The ASCS Southwest Region made a pair of stops at Manzanita last year with Ben Gregg topping both feature events, including one on the 1/3-mile and one on the ½-mile. Gregg, who racked up eight ASCS Southwest feature wins last year, had trouble in the opener and is currently ranked 18th in points.

Saturday's ASCS Southwest Region action at Manzanita Speedway goes green at 7:00 p.m.

Manzanita Speedway is located in Phoenix, AZ, off I-10 Exit 141, then four miles south on 35th Avenue to West Broadway. For more information, contact the track at 602-276-7575.

The ASCS Southwest Region is currently scheduled for eleven nights of competition. Nine of those events will take place at Tucson's USA Raceway with New Mexico's Hollywood Hills Speedway and Arizona's Manzanita Speedway each hosting one event.

The American Sprint Car Series, in its 18th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing events, brings the best of Sprint Car racing to nearly 100 different tracks throughout 25 states and Canada in 2009. Anchored by the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Dirt Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of a dozen different Regions throughout the nation.

Additional information regarding the American Sprint Car Series is available at www.ascsracing.com.

Johnny Herrera will be there, and then it's off to Texas for a Woo show, then on to Iowa and his new ride.. "Larry and Lori Woodward are proud to announce that they have hired Johnny "Hollywood" Herrera as their driver for the 2009 Season. The Team will contend for the 2009 Knoxville Track Championship and attend several IRA events as well as competing in a number of the most prestigious 410 races in the United States of America." ...... I've heard that some of of guy's will be strapping wings on, just to have another time around..If you know what I mean.

I won't be down, but I know it will be a better show than the Outlaws had Saturday.

Kenny..

Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.
