FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Elk City, Oklahoma - March 21, 2009 - Amarillo, Texas driver Donny Raney took the lead with five laps to go and then held off Robert Elliott at the finish line to win the inaugural O'Reilly/NCRA sport modified Cherokee Casino-Resort feature at Elk Citys I-40 Speedway in Elk City, Oklahoma on Saturday night.
The front row for the Cherokee Casino-Resort feature finale was shared by Elliott and Raney but it was third starting Randy Thomas of Elk City taking the lead in Borden Milk of Thomas District/Champ Graphics sponsored sport modified. The lead would be short lived, however, as Elliott would take over the point down the backstretch on lap two. The top three through four laps were Elliott, followed by Thomas and Raney before Raney took over the runner up position on lap five and set his sights on the leader.
One lap later, Raney would get a run on the leader down low entering turns three and four and would take the lead on lap seven. Elliott returned the favor entering turn one just moments and continued to hold off challenges by Raney.
The first caution of the Cherokee Casino-Resort feature fell on lap ten when Paul Vines came to a stop at the bottom of turn four. The restart saw Raney briefly take the lead down the backstretch, only to see Elliott retake the top spot and credited with leading lap eleven. Cody Whitworth began putting his efforts for the lead into the mix as he made it a three way battle, passing Raney for the runner up position and briefly challenging Elliott for the lead on lap eleven. Raney would take over second from Whitworth before a lap twelve caution for Greg Deterding halted the event.
Once racing resumed, Elliott continued out front for the next several laps but pressure from Raney and his Brandon McDanials owned, D&M race cars would increase. Both drivers race side by side for the next several laps before a lap thirteen caution slowed the pace once again.
On the restart, Raney would take advantage as he would pressure Elliott down the backstretch before diving underneath the leader entering turns three and four to take the lead. He looked to have things well in hand with five laps to go as he built a six car length advantage. However, Elliott would not go quietly as the final lap saw Elliott make one last ditch effort for the top spot entering turns three and four. With Raney up high and Elliott down low, it was a drag race to the finish line with Raney taking the one car length victory.
Eleventh starting Nick Shenberger aboard the Pat McVicker Oil Field, Baker Fabrication sponsored Quick sport modified chassis made his way through the field late and passed Whitworth late to take the third position while Todd Decker rounded out the top five.
The eight lap heat races for the forty car field were won by Whitworth, Thomas, Raney, Vines and Elliott with Chad McNamara taking winning honors in the ten lap "C" feature. Shenberger won the twelve lap "B" feature over Rudas Gaumor and McNamara.
The next event for the O'Reilly/NCRA sport modifieds will be held on Saturday night, May 23, at Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kansas. David and Chris,

I will start by saying we had a great time Saturday night. but I do believe there were many mistakes in the scoring. if you look on the heat races there where 8 cars in each heat and heat 1 shows 9 cars and heat 2 shows 6 cars. We finished 4th in heat one but we were scored in 6th. I guess this is how we ended up in the C when we had it figured we would be in the B. I know it would not have changed our outcome much because we had a mechanical problem that put us out anyways. I just think they need to address the problem as the points are incorrect.

Thanks for the results. It was a pretty good show. Nice to see the large field of cars also. I wonder how some of the drivers felt though since the track conditions pretty much sucked, but they tried to fix the problem. They had a lot of cars run on the track too though. It good for being the first race of the year for me. Now I am ready to go back to the races, but I have to wait a couple of weeks. Which really sucks! LOL!LETS GO RACIN!!
