IT’S ON!! 2009 Spring Sprint Car Open set for Saturday
“Never say die” attitude at MRP; Promoter Hawes keeps pumps at full throttle by Bob Burbach
Marysville, CA - March 4, 2009 --- The weather gods must have heard the prayers of sprint car fans and the 2009 Spring Sprint Car Open at Marysville Raceway Park is on! Promoter Paul Hawes informed this observer Wednesday that the pumps are on and the race will be run as scheduled. Weather predictions have made a quick 180 and the outlook for Saturday is bright.
MRP Sprint Car rules will be in force when a spectacular field of winged warriors cinch up the belts for the 1st race of the season. The Wingless sprint cars will also be on the program and a full field will sling their mounts around MRP for the 1st time in 2009. Throttle down, championship caliber racers from all over California are expected for this, the first big race of the 2009 season. Pre-entries include past champions as well as some of the hottest young stars around.
At this sprint car only event, champions from MRP and other tracks will roar around Marysville Raceway Park’s new layout. Past Champions and perennial hot shoes from every association in California will be headed to MRP. Nevada’s very own “Madman” Mike Monahan was among the pre entries that also include Auburn’s Andy “Mr. Excitement” Forsberg. 3-time MRP Champion and last year’s Placerville Speedway champion Colby Wiesz “The Colfax Comet” will likely bring the family hot rod down for this stellar event. 2007 MRP Champion Jeremy Burt from Grass Valley will be headed to the track where he has had his greatest successes. 3-time MRP champ Korey Lovell of Yuba City is thrashing hard to get his brand new mount into tip top shape for the grueling 30-lap finale. These are but a few of the stars that will head to Yuba Sutter’s only professional sporting venue.
The Wingless Sprint Car portion of the show will feature a who’s who of that spectacular group of racers. Division rivals from last year, Paradise’s Tony Richards and Marysville’s own Jeremy Hawes, are likely to continue their spirited combat among a host of great stars from that division. While racers from every venue in California will compete, Marysville Raceway Park rules will apply.
Ignoring every sensible reason to cancel this event, promoters Paul and Kathy Hawes (and every one associated with making this track raceable), deserve a tip of the straw hat for this one. As late as Wednesday morning relentless rain and near flooding conditions pummeled the facility. But, by late afternoon, the sun pushed it’s way through the clouds. A stiff afternoon breeze started to dry out the grounds and stiffened everyone’s resolve to put on a race this Saturday. The pumps were re-fired and workers started to bolt, screw and build once again. There may be a little painting left undone on Saturday, but a new look and a faster surface will greet spectators and drivers alike. The remodeled and elevated pit grandstand will offer participants and their crews an unparalleled view of the track.
With the running of the Spring Sprint Car Open, Marysville Raceway Park will, once again, host the first special event of the season for Winged 360 Sprinters. Adding the Wingless Sprinters just seemed to be a Natural. The Winged Sprint Car feature will pay $2500 to win ($150 to start) and the Wingless Sprint Car feature will pay a cool $1000 ($125 to start). These attractive numbers will bring out the brightest stars in 360 Sprint Car racing to MRP this Saturday night. Wicked-Fast speeds and daring drivers are ready to do battle at MRP. As they say in the ads…BE THERE!
