Former King of California Ronnie Day to drive for Werbach Motorsports in 2009

By Gary Thomas

Los Gatos, CA - February 28, 2009…Salinas, Cali veteran and former King of California Ronnie Day has been tabbed to be at the helm of the Los Gatos Construction Company, Werbach Motorsports No. 20 sprinter for the upcoming '09 racing season.

The 50 year-old driver has consistently been one of the top sprint car pilots within the competitive Northern California open wheel racing scene over the last 20 or so years and it should be no different in 2009.

The Day/Werbach combination will be competing full-time with the GLR Investments 360 Series at the Ocean Speedway and should be a strong contender for the title. "I really believe we have a shot to win this championship," car owner Tim Werbach said. "Ronnie will take a car to its limits and that's exactly what we need to bring home the GLR title for all our sponsors and supporters."

In addition to running at Ocean Speedway with the GLR Series, Day and the Los Gatos Construction Company No. 20 machine will be in action at the Mark Forni Classic in July at Placerville, the Pacific Sprint Fall Nationals at Chico and the annual Trophy Cup at Tulare's Thunderbowl Raceway in October. The team is also talking about the possibility of running the fair race in Chico over Memorial Day weekend.

Among Day's highest accomplishments came in the year 2000 when he captured the Golden State Challenge King of California 410 Series championship, while driving the Country Builders Construction No. 88 sprinter. That same season he also brought home a huge victory at the annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at the Skagit Speedway in Alger, Washington . In addition to his victory that year, Day also finished 3rd at the Dirt Cup on Saturday night in 2005.

Day hasn't been a point chaser for much of his career, but whenever he has run full-time he has had success and often times has finished near the front of the field. In addition to his King of California championship in 2000 and a California Rebel Cup 360 Series title in 2004, Day has finished runner-up in the GSC points in 2006, 1996 and '91 and also finished fourth in '92.

The veteran driver has also had a number of big moments at the storied Calistoga Speedway ½ mile dirt track where he brought home the track championship in 1996 and his eight career wins also put him 12th on the all-time Calistoga win list.

Other highlights in Day's career include winning the Johnny Key Classic in 1998, the Pombo/Sargent Classic in 2005 and the inaugural Trophy Cup in 1994. He also finished runner-up at the Trophy Cup in 2004, in which he won the Saturday night main event from the 18th starting position, but missed out on the overall Trophy Cup title by just five points to World of Outlaw super-star Jac Haudenschild.

For the upcoming season, Los Gatos Construction Company is returning as a major contributor to the Werbach Motorsports team as well as help coming from MAAS Brothers Powdercoating & Cardinal Industrial Coatings. "We have to thank all our returning and new sponsors, but we are always in need of more," Werbach said. "There is plenty of room on this race car for more marketing partners and were always ready and willing to work with anyone."

Great News! Will be good having Ronnie run the GLR 360 Series with us this year, (we'll miss Bud ). Always fun to have Carole & Cory there as well. A great family and a welcomed addition to the series.

Hey GT don't forget that Ronnie beat Tony stewart in 1997 at Las Vegas in the midgets, with a last lap pass!

The older I get, the faster I used to be.
