Bud Kaeding wins exciting Copper on Dirt Silver Crown feature

By Gary Thomas

Phoenix, Arizona – February 24, 2009…The Manzanita Speedway has always been a place of great success for Bud Kaeding and it continued this past weekend with the 29 year-old driver claiming the opening round of action for the K& N USAC Silver Crown Series at the third annual Sands Chevrolet Copper on Dirt.

Competing aboard the BK Motorsports, K & N Filters No. 29 Kaeding won out in an entertaining race long battle with Missouri's Jesse Hockett. "Those kind of races are always fun and to come out on top made it even better," Kaeding said.

Opening night on Friday at the Copper on Dirt featured preliminary action and it saw the two-time Silver Crown champ qualify third quickest in the field and score a runner-up finish in the Copper Bowl Shootout, which awarded him a front row starting spot for Saturday's main event.

Starting alongside Hockett in the 50 lap feature Saturday night, Kaeding quickly jumped into the lead and would hold the top spot until the 14th circuit when Hockett, who drives a car co-owned by NASCAR star Carl Edwards, was able to get by for the lead.

It didn't last long however, as Kaeding got his elbows back up and drove by Hockett to reclaim the point on lap 15. The back and forth action continued though as Hockett returned the favor on lap 22, putting the Campbell driver back to second once again.

The tussle was reminiscent of last years Copper on Dirt Silver Crown feature where Kaeding diced it up with Jon Stanbrough, only to lose the lead late in the feature to Jerry Coons Jr. Kaeding however, wasn't about to let this one slip away as he stayed close to Hockett and motored around him on lap 48 to take back the lead and go on to drive the MPD Racing Products, YAK Graphics, MDR Machine No. 29 under the checkered flag to claim victory at Manzanita yet again.

It was a big win for Kaeding & BK Motorsports, whose best Silver Crown Series finish last year was second. "It feels great to come out here and start the season in victory lane," the 29 year-old driver said. "We didn't get a win last year in the Silver Crown car so we definitely wanted to change that this year. Manzy has always been a good place for us. We've won the Western a couple times so it's pretty cool to get a Copper win now."

With the rainout of Ocean Speedway's World of Outlaws race, the next scheduled event for Kaeding will now be the 23rd annual Mini Gold Cup at Chico's Silver Dollar Speedway. "We were looking forward to having a home race against the Outlaws, but with all the rain recently it just wasn't possible. We'll just get ready for Chico now and hope for some luck at the Mini Gold Cup," Kaeding concluded.
