Kinser's 2005 Alltel DIRTcar Nationals Victory One To Remember
Can the 'King of the Outlaws' match his feat in '09? Find out in only 23 days
BARBERVILLE, Fla. — Jan. 11, 2009 — It was pretty hard to believe that heading into the 2005 Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH that 20-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Steve Kinser had not won at Volusia Speedway Park near Daytona Beach, Fla. With more than 500 wins in his career, there are very few Victory Lanes where Kinser has not visited. The native of Bloomington, Ind., was on a mission in the finale on Feb. 13, 2005, to win a World of Outlaws race at the blazing fast half-mile oval.
After finishing second on the opening night of the event, Kinser put himself in a perfect spot to claim the $10,000 top prize, first by setting fast time in qualifying and then following that up with a win in the Crane Cams Dash to start on the pole in the 30-lap contest. He would lead the first nine laps before Craig Dollansky got around him for the top spot. Just three laps later Kinser retook the lead from Dollansky and would pace the field for the remainder of the race to score the victory, which at the time was the 514th of his career with the series.
"Basically, we went back to what we thought was right the other night, except for that one change we made under red [Friday night]," said Kinser. "We made a few little changes but everything was good tonight. After the Dash, we left the car alone."
Dollansky finished second in the finale of the event that season, with Jason Meyers third, Fred Rahmer fourth and Kraig Kinser fifth. The A-Feature event that night consisted of 12 drivers that will be competing full-time with the World of Outlaws this season beginning with the 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH.
"There's a lot of parity with all these race teams," noted Dollansky, of the level of competition at the season opening event in 2005. "This weekend you had all the best teams in the country. It made it very tough for a lot of good teams to even make it into the A-main. I was happy with the progress our team made."
In 11 A- Feature events for the World of Outlaws at Volusia Speedway Park dating back to 1981, there have been 11 different drivers visit Victory Lane, as drivers from across the country converge on the Sunshine State to open their seasons after a long winter of preparation. World of Outlaws drivers will compete not only against each other during the 38th Annual Alltel DIRTcar Nationals by UNOH, but also the top drivers from the All Star Circuit of Champions, the always tough Pennsylvania Posse and drivers from the West Coast as well.
