for the first time in a while the woo will be spending some time in cali at the start of the season. how many of you out there are looking forward to seeing them as their season is fresh? i still am not a fan of the woo regulations on where the teams can race, but i still am looking forward to seeing friends that would other wise not be seen untill the end of the year. sure the woo has made a stop and go in cali to race at tulare at the start of the season in years past, but to have five shows here right at the beginning of the year is cool imo. and to have the shows spread out over the state a bit lets most of us see them at least once without having to travel very far. but i for one will be trying to make as many as i can! i think it is great that ocean speedway is hosting the first round of outlaw racing in the state. the last race with haud and kinser was excelent and for the track to rebound right back with another show says a lot about how devoted the management is to try to bring us great racing. just think almost a month of woo shows to kick off the cali season and give us a fix that might last us till sept!

Though its been many years since I last visited Watsonville (Ocean) I feel the need to comment on how well track management seems to be doing in the last few years to support of open wheel racing. While not a big fan of the Outlaws anymore it is impressive that the track has them back early this year. Also bringing back the Johnny Key race was a terrific strategic move for local race fans. Hopefully they have assumed control of open wheel racing in the south bay since the loss of San Jose @ the fairgrounds. Hats off to Ocean and their track management.

i agree that the track has helped to bring a resurgence of open wheel racing back to the area. as far as the key race goes and the recent talk about a possibility of a format change, i hope that does not happen. last years key race had many former winners competing in it. they raced a race that had the same basic format and history that it had when they raced and won it in the past. just as it was when it all began. we now have veteran drivers, sons and grandsons and brothers of former winners as well as former winners themselves competing. each of them should have the chance to race and win the same way those before them did, in a format as original contemporary times will allow. when brent won this past year, he did it in a format that was as simular as it could be to the way his father won it. it has the most original and unique format of any circle track auto race in the country, no matter what type of series or its distinction. it is not unique to put on a cookie cutter formated race. the key race and the weeks leading up to it evoke memories and emotions of the hero's of the areas past, and offers a chance to salute them as well as the memory of a local racer who was lost seeking his path to national stardom. johnny key was killed racing with his friend elmer george, yes george, the same family of indy 500 fame. he never made a national name for himself as george snider or billy vukovich, but those names came to pay respect to him as one of their own. bill scott, burt foland, marshall sargent, howard kaeding, al pombo, clyde palmer. they all earned their way into the key race under a unique format developed to honor a unique man. i think their descendants and others deserve the same opportunity to honor johnny in the same way.

The Johnny Key is a traditional race in Northern California. It is unique in the way that competitors qualify for the race. The format should never be changed. There are plenty of two-day shows or even big one-day races for the travelers to make money. Leave the Key format alone. Travelers can even qualify for this great race. Just my two cents.
