BTW, here is the best pilot who has ever lived, bar none. Mind you that this aircraft is a BOX STOCK Aero Commander, WITHOUT and inverted fuel or oil system.

I feel privileged to have meet Mr. Hoover and seen him perform in both the Aerocommander and the Mustang. He and John Glenn more or less came of age as pilots at the same time back in the glory days of chasing after the speed of sound after WWII. Mr. Glenn probably got more of the glory what with breaking the sound barrier and being an astronaut but Mr. Hoover had super human ability in an airplane.

i would add one more to that list Chuck Yeager. he was also a WWII ace, could fly anything in the inventory and was a x-plane test pilot on Air Force wages.

I too have met Mr. Hoover and have seen him perform several times in both the "Shrike" and the Mustang. In Yeager's autobiography, he talks about he and Hoover coming back to the base after strafing runs with tree twigs stuck in the wing leading edges from flying so low. He says that Hoover is the best pilot he's ever seen.

I remember seeing that plane when I was a kid - didn't recall the pilot's name but I remember being amazed at the things he could do with that big airplane. It was at Civic Memorial Airport in Bethalto, IL -- back in the late 60's I think... They used to have an annual air show headlined by the Blue Angels or Thunderbirds and that Aero Commander was one of the earlier performers and did some insane maneuvers - totally amazing.

No....I'm not THAT old!!! As a second generation aircraft mechanic who's father took him to the races EVERY week, aviation is as deep a passion for me as sprints and midgets.

Two of my all time favorite aerobatic pilots were killed 3 years ago. Jimmy Franklin and Bobby Younkin were involved in a midair collision in 2005. To me, they (especially Jimmy) were two of the best out there at the time. Jimmy was the only performer that still gave me butterflies while watching him perform, even after seeing his act 10 or 15 times. He was best known for his 1939 Waco UPF-7 "Mystery Ship". It had the factory engine removed and replaced it with a Pratt & Whitney R-985 that had about twice as much horsepower. Later on, he added a J-85 jet engine between the landing gear!!! Bobby Younkin was best knows for doing aerobatics in a box stock Beech 18. An aircraft that, like Bob Hoover's "Shrike Commander", was never intended for aerobatics, but in the hands of a great pilot, it wasn't a big deal. He also did aerobatics in a Lear Jet 23, which is just unheard of. Once again, neither of those aircraft had inverted fuel or oil systems!

How about crybabies??? There seems to be plenty of those around here for that topic. Shit people, if you don't want to read it, don't click on it. Seems pretty simple to me.
