Bud Kaeding & Werbach Motorsports ready for 15th annual Trophy Cup

By Gary Thomas

Tulare, CA – October 22, 2008…After finishing off the 410 winged sprint car portion of the Northern California season this past weekend, Campbells’ Bud Kaeding will hop back aboard the Werbach Motorsports No. 20 sprinter for one last time this Thurs-Sat as he completes the 360 part of his season during the 15th annual Trophy Cup at Tulare’s Thunderbowl Raceway.

Kaeding last weekend was in competition during a double-header weekend with the Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Series and it marked his final race of 2008 driving the Alviso Rock, BK Motorsports No. 29 winged sprint car. On Friday night the series was at his home track of Ocean Speedway and it saw him win the B-main before finishing 23rd in the feature. Kaeding then traveled down to the Thunderbowl Raceway where he missed the heat race inversion by just one spot, but was able to transfer into the main event where he would go on and finish 20th.

This weekend will find Kaeding traveling back down to the Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway to compete in the Werbach Motorsports, Los Gatos Construction Company, SL & M No. 20 machine at the 15th annual Trophy Cup, which has a three-night purse of $112,500. The prestigious event will be billed as a tribute to Kaeding’s grandfather Howard and has moved to a three-night format for the first time ever this year. The Trophy Cup also benefits the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the organization will be presented with another large check on the front straightaway this Saturday night at the track.

The Trophy Cup has grown to be one of the most prestigious sprint car events on the west coast over the last decade and Kaeding goes into this year looking to win it for the first time in his career. “The Trophy Cup has always been a fun race and one that I’ve always enjoyed running ever since it was held in San Jose,” Kaeding said. “My dad and brother have won it before and I although I haven’t had the chance to, I think we have a good shot this weekend because this 20 car has been fast all year.”

Kaeding has put together a solid season while driving the Werbach Motorsports sprinter on a limited basis as he finished in a tie for fourth in the Ocean Speedway standings, picking up a pair of wins along the way. The Campbell racer also finished fourth at the Johnny Key Classic in late August and car owner Tim Werbach is looking forward to capping the season at the Trophy Cup. “Bud has done a great job for us this season and this whole team is amped up and ready to go,” said Werbach. “Tulare’s a fun track and there will be some great cars this weekend so it’ll be pretty darn competitive.”

The pit gate at the Thunderbowl Raceway will open up at 10am Thursday morning with the drivers meeting scheduled for approximately 3:30pm, hot laps at 4:30 and qualifying scheduled for around 5:45. Pit passes will be $35 on Thursday and $45 on Friday & Saturday. People will also have the option of purchasing a three-day pit pass for $110 and all who keep their wristbands will get into Friday’s teriyaki bbq & Saturday’s spaghetti feed for free. Both the BBQ and Spaghetti feed will be held from 12 noon to 3pm on Fri & Sat respectively with both events featuring live music. The auction to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation will also be held on Saturday.

Front grandstand General Admission Bleacher tickets will cost $20 on Thursday, $25 on Friday and $30 on Saturday. Reserved Grandstand seats will be $25 on Thursday, $30 on Friday and $35 on Saturday. Tickets will available through the track office by credit card until noon on Thursday by calling (559) 688-0909. After that the Thunderbowl Raceway box office will open at 1pm with tickets being on sale by cash only. On Friday and Saturday the box office is scheduled to open at 10am with tickets being on sale by cash only as well.

T-shirts still on sale:

Bud Kaeding/ Werbach Motorsports T-shirts will be on sale at the rig during this weekend’s 15th annual Trophy Cup and we encourage people to stop by and pick one up.

I just wanted to say that it was great having Bud Kaeding out here racing in California this year. In whatever he has planned for next year, wishing Bud all the best!
