Myers Brothers Racing finish sixth and seventh in 4th annual Wingless Nationals

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – October 14, 2008…Putting a cap on the 2008 racing season, Myers Brothers Racing finished off the year with finishes of sixth and seventh during the final night of the fourth annual Wingless Spec Sprint Nationals at the Silver Dollar Speedway this past Saturday evening.

The final event of the Silver Dollar Speedway season kicked off on Friday night and it featured cold & windy temperatures with a field of 52 wingless sprint cars on hand. The Browns Valley duo of Cody and Mason Myers started out the night with good performance in qualifying, but various issues later in the evening took away finishes that the team had hoped for, as Mason crashed out in his heat race and Cody pulled off late in the feature.

Coming back on Saturday saw a shorter field with a number of cars not making it back due to crashes and motor problems from the night before. Despite severe damage on the front end of Mason’s car from Friday, the team was able to wake up early and work on the car in time to get it ready for the final night of the ’08 racing season.

Group qualifying was held during the weekend and the session on Saturday went well for both drivers for the second night in a row as Cody timed in fifth fastest aboard the Franks Backhoe, Cal West Concrete No. 9m with Mason right there in seventh wheeling the Performance Auto Supply, Matco Tools No. 3m.

Heat race competition then saw Cody drive to a fourth place finish to transfer him into the night’s dash where he started from the outside of the front row. The track surface had gotten extremely slick on the top in turns one and two however, and Cody wasn’t able to get to the bottom in time and dropped a few positions to end the dash in fifth and give the Browns Valley Truck & RV, Aces Heavy Transport sprinter a third row starting spot in the main event.

A bit of luck shined on Cody however, when the two cars starting in front of him had to be push started and due to the rules, those cars had to start at the rear of the field. It moved Cody up to the pole position for the 30 lap feature and at the waving of the green flag he fell into line second behind leader Bob Newberry. Early on Cody was right there with Newberry, but a large amount of caution laps never allowed any kind of a flow to get underway.

As Cody tried to hang with Newberry he missed the bottom at one point and it allowed Taylor Simas to sneak under him for the runner-up spot. He then tried to hang in over the remaining laps, but fought the set-up on the car as it had gone away during the last half of the race and eventually brought home a seventh place finish at the checkered flag.

After qualifying seventh fastest to begin the night brother Mason found himself starting fifth in the third heat race and was giving it his all in a battle for the transfer, when he got a little high in turn one and spun to a stop. It then forced him to run the night’s 12 lap B-main and he was able to hang tight and bring home a runner-up finish behind Darrell Hanestad to transfer into the Wingless Nationals main event. Mason then lined-up in the fifth row for the 30 lap contest and did a nice job to pick off some cars and move the Don’s Landscaping, Hunt Magnetos machine up to sixth by the time the checkered flag was unveiled.

It was a good way to end a year that saw Myers Brothers Racing suffer through the sophomore jinx as it seemed all too often that the luck wasn’t on the team’s side. “We’re happy to be able to roll the cars into the trailer in one piece and have both finish in the top 10 tonight,” said team owner Blane Myers. “It was a grueling year, but coming into it we had the goal of making every Chico & Placerville race and that’s exactly what we did. It took some late night’s and lot of headaches, but in the end we had some fun and gained a lot of experience,” he concluded.
