How much heavier (on average) is a complete 360 steel block (w/ aluminum heads) engine vs. a complete 410 aluminum block (w/ aluminum heads) engine?

I am going to say about 100 lbs. Partly because the weight rule at Knoxville is 1475 for 360's and 1375 for 410's. The cars are basically identical.

The weights are very similar when using a salvage yard 2 bolt block. This is achieved by retrofitting 4 bolt splayed caps and no small amount of milling and grinding on the steel block. I think the big "allowance" for a 360 is for those using a Bow Tie or Dart or similar block. These can easily add as much as 80 pounds. You should also keep in mind restricted head 360's almost always are a derivative of a Brodix 11 head and 410's run a much larger(and heavier) -12 style head. There is some savings with the smaller injectors. So my blowhard answer is it depends.

if you pick up a later 410 in the pre wieght WoO days the advantage is closer to 140lbs, yes, the 2 bolt junker 360 blocks are lighter castings as a Dart, Bowtie, ect, the drawback is the cost to retrofit the block to a useable piece, is almost that of a "good" block , cracking and fatiuge are possible to be found on the Junker block,(before or aft) you get what you pay for , it really depends what you, realistically (Hp, wieght, life) want to get out of the mill, I believe the 360's of today are starting to exceed the castings integrity of older GM blocks, if im correct ? who knows, I could be full of shit . JMO!

50 cubic inches less at 2# per cubic inch would yield 100 pounds more for the 410 motor but much like the other answers just so much bull feathers. Race 'em!

It totallie depands on hough much compreshion it has. A 410 with 17 to 1 compreshion will weight more than a 360 with only 14 to 1 compreshion! (Compreshion pushes down harder on the crankshavt)

Sorry.....I could NOT resist after the Haud/flat rr scales debacle!!

But wat about the oil? If you had 0 weight oil instead of 20 weight, would you save 20 pounds/quart?

So Mark, if you scale your car with the motor running it will weigh more than if you shut it off??? This is getting good.

What if you were to put magnets on the bottom of the car so when it sits on the scales it would be drawn downward and seem heavier than it really is? wink

Again, just air up the tires....at 40+ pounds of air per tire, you'll always make weight!

What if its running? Will it alternate between way heavy due to the downward thrust of the engine, then way light due to the upward thrust?

lol

On a serious note....did you ever notice that Knoxville has a tent/rooflike structure over their scale???

This is so that if the wind is blowing, it will not give a false reading from downforce on the wing!

I thought that was to protect the scale because of the thin ozone layer caused by Global Warming. You know around a race track there is a lot of extra emissions because race cars don't run a catalytic converter.

If you are weighing Mark Kinser's school bus, what is the weight difference between the aforementioned 360steel/410aluminum.

Elma has the best scale I've seen, it's a shed with roll up doors on both ends and the scale is about 8' x 15' in the floor. No question about weight, even with a flat tire.

I heard it had an electronic compression compensator also.

It will depend on how many passengers are riding on the school bus and how many beverages they have consumed.

if the magnets were on the bottom of the car they would be pulling the scale UP, therefore making the car seem lighter!
