Geving charges her way into feature event during penultimate Civil War Series event at Ocean Speedway

By Bill Sullivan

WATSONVILLE, CA (9-21-08) – It wasn’t a night that ended with victory or a top finish but Alissa Geving and her Chicko Motorsports- Matt Cordeiro Enterprises – Pit Stop USA sprint car had good reason to celebrate Saturday night at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville. On a night that began with mechanical woes and adversity, Geving charged her way into the 30-lap feature event Saturday night to maintain her impressive fourth place position in the series standings.

“When this night started out I didn’t think it was going to be turning out too good,” said Geving, who lost power steering in warm ups and was forced to enter the preliminary portion of the program before repairs could be made. “I had no power steering and the car was really hard to hang on to. It really set me back in qualifying tonight. When you qualify bad in a Civil War race your whole night can be a work out.”

For Geving, Saturday night was indeed a work out. In the first 10-lap preliminary heat race of the night she started in the seventh position and only managed to advance into the sixth position by the time the checkered flag waved. After qualifying 25th in the field of 38 cars earlier in the night, she started deep in the field of the B-feature, lining up in the 9th position. The B-feature is a mere 12-lap event that transfers the top six finishers into the A-feature and parks everyone else for the night.

Entering Saturday’s event, Geving had inched into the fourth place position in the current Civil War point standings behind four time champion Andy Forsberg of Auburn and just single digits ahead of veteran drivers Mike Benson of Calistoga and Herman Klein of Sacramento. Prior to the start of the last chance qualifier on Saturday night Geving was well aware her cards were down and she set a goal to turn her challenging night into a successful one.

After the waving of the green flag, Geving charged into the seventh position of the caution plagued B-feature event, one position from being eligible to advance in the program. Sitting in front of her was Klein, a driver known in the sport for his hard charging win it or wear it driving style that has given him great success. Lap after lap Geving continued to close in on Klein, testing the high line several times and the more preferred low line that Klein was protecting so consistently. With Klein stifling any effort on the low side, the 17-year-old third generation Petaluma track champion did what she had to do to get in the 30-lap feature event; with the white flag waving, Geving brought the south bay crowd to a roar when she went to the outside of Klein and muscled her way into the transfer position.

“She got it done, she went to the high side and she did what she had to do, what a move by Chicko,” said her father Gary Geving as he celebrated with her crew atop the team hauler. “It’s not easy to make the high side work at this place and this is only our second time here. I’m really proud of her.”

With both Klein and Benson out of contention, Geving drove a smart race in the 30-lap feature. Starting in the 22nd position she used great patience in a race that hosted its share of caution flags and pushed her way up to the 13th position by the time the checkered flag waved. The once single digit point deficit between she and fifth place transformed into a 20-point advantage over Benson and Klein who are now tied for position behind the nations youngest female sprint car champion in history.

“I knew I had the ability to help my position in the points tonight with both of them not transferring,” said Geving. “I started last in the field and I knew going all the way to the front was not a reasonable goal here. I kept my nose clean and set out to finish the race and I’m happy with 13th here tonight. This night ended a lot better then it started that’s for sure.”

This coming Saturday, Geving returns to Placerville Speedway as the 2008 racing season their comes to a dramatic close with the grand finale of the Civil War Sprint Car Series. Following her trip to the sierra foothill bullring, Geving will be an entrant in the upcoming Pacific Sprint Fall Nationals at Silver Dollar Speedway the first weekend in October.

“I’m looking forward to going back to Placerville and wrapping up the Civil War, this has been a great season and I love this series,” said Geving. “I’m really looking forward to Chico in two weeks,” said Geving. “We did well during the Gold Cup. The car felt good up there and the Fall Nationals is an awesome event. I love Silver Dollar Speedway and can’t wait to get back up there.”
