Geving officially celebrates championship and advances to fourth in Civil War point standings

By Bill Sullivan

PETALUMA, CA (9-13-08) Although she officially clinched the season title two weeks ago, Penngrove’s Alissa Geving was officially awarded the 2008 Petaluma Speedway All Pro Point Series winged sprint car championship Saturday night in the final winged event of the year at the North Bay track featuring the Civil War Sprint Cars.

“I won the championship a week early, before the Gold Cup,” said Geving. “But tonight its all official and it feels really good. A lot of people worked very hard to help me get here this year. I can’t thank my parents enough for all their support. Following in the footsteps of my grandfather and my dad is really special. I wish grandpa was here to celebrate with us, I know he would be so proud.”

Saturday’s event was the final appearance of the Civil War Sprint Car series at Geving’s hometown track of Petaluma Speedway. Petaluma Speedway awards championship points for their regular All Pro Series point championship in all special events as well, requiring their weekly regulars to compete in the high caliber events for the sake of healthy car counts and fan spirit. When it comes to that fan spirit, Geving is no exception as she was greated by a roaring grandstand of fans Saturday night when she took to the track for her heat race.

“Those cheers are hard earned and very well deserved,” commented one spectator Saturday night. “She’s a great driver that comes from a great family of racers and she earned this championship outright. She’s the all American girl in this sport and it’s been a pleasure seeing her succeed like this.”

Much to the fans’ liking, Geving won that preliminary heat race and locked a starting spot in the 30-lap feature event. Starting deep in the field, in the 15th position, Geving maintained her position throughout the event that had its share of mishaps. At the conclusion of the night she had advanced to fourth in the Civil War standings with two events remaining at Watsonville and Placerville. Before returning to the pit area Geving parked on the same front stretch that her father and grandfather parked on to receive the ceremonial checkered flag for her championship effort.

“Its over, I can’t believe it is actually over already,” said Geving. “I set a goal for myself this year and I accomplished it. Three generations of champions in my family, wow, that is pretty special. I’m looking forward to the next two Civil War races at Ocean Speedway and Placerville and especially the Fall Nationals in Chico.”

The Fall Nationals in Chico on October 2-4 will conclude Geving’s 2008 history making sprint car season. A senior at UrsulineHigh School in Sonoma, she hopes to continue her racing career in 2009, juggling a college schedule along with a racing schedule in hopes of one day transforming her true talent into a fulltime career.

“We haven’t really set our final plans for next year yet, I want to go to school because it’s important to get a higher education no matter what you do,” said Geving. “So a pretty simple solution would be to find a school next door to a racetrack.” As of yet no major universities offer scholarships for talented sprint car racers…perhaps its time for one to do so.

Alissa Gevings’ title sponsors include Pit Stop USA, Matt Cordeiro Enterprises, Tillett Tool and Auto Repairs Unlimited. Additional sponsors include Leak Detection Pros.
