Bud Kaeding ends Gold Cup Race of Champions 5th in C-main

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – September 10, 2008…Competing in the most prestigious winged sprint car event on the west coast Campbell’s Bud Kaeding finished off the 55th annual Gold Cup of Champions with a fifth place finish in the C-main on Saturday night.

Going into the prestigious event at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Kaeding hadn’t run in a 410 winged sprint car event since the last weekend in July and looked forward to getting back behind the wheel of the BK Motorsports No. 29 sprinter at the World of Outlaws Sprint Series sanctioned show.

The 28 year-old took part in the Friday qualifying night where he began the evening by timing in 28th fastest, before rebounding in his heat race to score a fifth place finish and transfer the Alviso Rock, K & N Filters No. 29 into the main event. Kaeding then started in the 11th row during the 30 lap main event and was making progress when he got into the treacherous turn four cushion, which sent him upside down coming off the corner.

It was a tough break since he was battling for a top 10 spot at the time of the tumble and left him with a 14th place finish in the final rundown. After points were tallied for the two prelim nights of racing, Kaeding saw himself sitting 43rd in the standings out of 106 entrants, and it was good enough to give him a fourth row starting spot in the C-main for Saturday.

When the green flag waved in the C-main on the final night Kaeding got around a couple drivers and had a very fast race car, but unfortunately the track was just too good as it still had a lot of grip and made passing opportunities very tough to come by. The two-time Silver Crown champion spent much of the closing laps running hard, but couldn’t make anything happen and settled for a fifth place finish to put an end to his Gold Cup Race of Champions.

Although the 55th Gold Cup Race of Champions didn’t go how he would have liked, Kaeding still had a good time being a part of the huge event. “We would have certainly liked to finish a little higher up, but qualifying and the flip in the feature on our prelim night really hurt us,” said the driver of the Tri-Valley, Kaeding Performance Maxim. “The competition at Gold Cup this year was unreal though and you almost had to be perfect because there were so many fast drivers here.”

The next big race on the docket for Bud Kaeding and BK Motorsports will be the upcoming 4-Crown Nationals at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Kaeding has won the sprint car portion of the 4-Crown on two separate occasions in his career and will look to put his name towards the front of the field on Saturday September 20.
