Myers Brothers Racing Team completes Hunt Magnetos Wingless season 3rd & 4th in points

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – September 9, 2008… The Myers Brothers Racing Team completed the 2008 Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Sprint Car point season this past Wednesday night at the annual Gold Cup Invitational in Chico and in doing so locked up third and fourth in the final series standings.

The Wednesday night Invitational was the kick off to the 55th annual Gold Cup Race of Champions week and it saw one of the biggest crowds of the season as 1000’s of spectators made their way to the Silver Dollar Speedway for the prestigious event.

A field of 24 cars was on hand for the special Wednesday night show and group qualifying was held for the evening of action, rather than the standard pill draw format. Both brothers timed in further back than preferred as Cody clocked in the 16th fastest lap of the night with Mason scoring 21st quick.

Mason then lined-up in the fourth row of his heat race and was able to carve his way forward in the eight lap race to finish third and transfer the Aces Heavy Transport, Cal West Concrete No. 3m into the main event. Cody was set to start from the front row in his heat race, but dropped out after a few laps and was forced to run the B-main in which he eventually went on to finish fourth and transfer into the feature.

Starting way back in 19th, Cody was moving forward from the rear of the field when he was involved in a big melee that started in front of him and ended with the Browns Valley Truck & RV, Performance Supply No. 9 getting upside down. The unfortunate incident put Cody out of the running and left his machine with severe damage.

Mason on the other hand had a great run as he started from the outside of the eighth row in the 20 lap feature and was able to carve through the field despite the tough track conditions. The 18 year-old methodically charged up as the race wound down and at the checkered flag crossed the line in sixth place.

After 28 races the Myers Brothers Racing Team have scored a pair of spots in the top five of the Hunt Magnetos/John Padjen Motorsports Wingless Series standings, with Mason finishing third and Cody in fourth. Team owner Blaine Myers had the goal of making every race this season and after Wednesday night that goal came to fruition. “Coming into the season we wanted to make every race and it was definitely a tough thing to do with the way the economy is,” Myers said.

Making the feat even more impressive was the fact that the team had to work into the wee hours of the morning and much of day countless times to get ready for the night’s action. There were more than a couple occasions where the Myers Brothers Racing rig arrived to the track just as soon, if not after, wheel packing had got underway. “We had some bad luck this year and it really made us work hard, but we persevered through it all and had a lot of fun running the full schedule,” Myers said. “We’re now looking forward to the Wingless Nationals and hope to have some luck on our side and get these cars up front.”

The fourth annual Joe Hunt Magnetos Wingless Nationals will be held on October 10 and 11 at Silver Dollar Speedway and a large field of drivers are expected to be on hand attempting to pick up the win at the prestigious event. Previous winners of the Wingless Nationals include Terry Shank Jr. (2005-’06) and Darrell Hanestad(last year).

Please stop by the Myers Brothers Racing trailer after the races to say hi and pick up a handout card. For more info on the Myers Brothers Racing Team please visit our website at
