'Wild Child' wins $50,000 Gold Cup payday By PAUL SHIGLEY-Special to the Chico E-R Article Launched: 09/07/2008 12:05:28 AM PDT CHICO — The Gold Cup Race of Champions is frequently decided when powerful World of Outlaws sprint cars weave through lapped traffic on the quarter-mile bullring, and Saturday night's 55th version of the event was no exception. Jason Meyers appeared headed to his first Gold Cup victory when the lapped car of Jesse Hockett spun in turn two directly in front of Meyers. With no options, Meyers slid to stop, handing the top spot to eventual winner Jac Haudenschild. The victory marked the third Gold Cup victory for the "Wild Child." "Lapped traffic was pretty tough to get through," a smiling Haudenschild said while accepting the winner's $50,000 check. "Just a lapped car spun in front of us," said Meyers, who won Friday night's preliminary race. "Of course we're disappointed. But the great thing about sprint car racing is there's another race in three days." Haudenschild took the checkered flag only two car-lengths in front of Craig Dollansky, while Chico's Jonathan Allard finished third, the best Gold Cup finish by a hometown driver since the Gold Cup moved to Silver Dollar in 1980. Two legends — Campbell's Brent Kaeding and three-time WoO champion Sammy Swindell — completed the top five. Meyers jumped into the lead as the green flag waved for 26 powerful sprint cars. The race halted on the third circuit when Washington's Jayme Barnes made contact with another car and flipped viciously off of turn two and into the pit wall. The crash partially Advertisement collapsed the top of the driver's cage and folded the frame into the engine. Barnes was shaken but walked away. When the race resumed, Meyers continued to hold the point on the restart and benefited by three caution flags that flew just as he entered heavy lapped traffic on the clay oval. Finally getting a couple longer green flag stretches during the middle portion of the race, the leaders started the patented slicing and dicing of lapped cars. Haudenschild grabbed second from Dollansky in heavy traffic on lap 16, and just past the halfway point, those two and Allard closed up tightly on Meyers. The four-car battle for the lead concluded when Meyers got trapped behind Hockett and the caution came out. The race restarted with 14 laps left, but the big action was finished. Dollansky jumped to the top of the track on the final lap to make one last charge but came up short. "We've been real quick all year but haven't been able to win many races," said Haudenschild, who had won only once on the World of Outlaws circuit prior to Saturday's event. The 50-year-old Wooster, Ohio, racer won the Gold Cup previously in 1998 and 1999, and has finished second the past two years in a row. Despite what appeared to be a comfortable lead, Haudenschild was keenly aware he needed to keep the hammer down. "When Dollansky is behind you, you better get going because he's going to find a way to get by you," Haudenschild said. "We needed to stay in lapped traffic," said a clearly disappointed Dollansky, who found the very top groove to his liking just as the cars took the white flag. "It was a better place for my car to operate. I needed one more lap." "It's definitely a winner-take-all kind of race," continued Dollansky, of Elk River, Minn. "We've won some preliminaries and got some thirds. Hopefully, next year, we'll win the thing." Allard denied that he was disappionted. "I feel great. It may not look like it, but I'm real ecstatic. It's going to take a little while for it to sink in," said Allard, the 2002 track champion. Finishing sixth through 10th were former Oroville resident Paul McMahan, 20-time WoO champion Steve Kinser, 2006 Gold Cup winner Daryn Pittman, Kinser's son Kraig and Chad Kemenah. The evening started with Mark Tabor Sr. winning the 10-lap F-main over Los Molinos driver Danny Ochs. Shane Stewart, who stands 11th in WoO points this season, took the 10-lap E-main, while Washington's Brock Lemley won the 12-lap D-main. Defending Gold Cup victor Joey Saldana won the 15-lap C-main over Chico's Jason York and 2008 track champion Andy Forsberg. In the 20-lap B-main, it was Hockett over Barnes and Grass Valley's Brad Sweet. Saldana and two-time defending WoO champion Donny Schatz both had to use provisionals to make the main event field, but the tough luck that plagued both all weekend continued. Saldana finished 16th, while Schatz dropped out early and was credited with 25th place. The World of Outlaws will return to Silver Dollar Speedway twice next season — for the Gold Cup in September and, for the first time since the early 1990s, the Mini Gold Cup in March.

i have nothing against meyers but i have to respectfully disagree. it appeard that haud was in a position to make a charge for the lead, if not actually pass meyers when hockett spun. if meyers had not unfortunatly got caught up in the spin, it would have potentially saved him from a pass by haud. it could be argued what the outcome of the race would have been if meyers would have been able to resart in front of jac. but there would have been no arguement that haud would have been on the move and jason would have had no easy drive to stay out front! oh, and no one would have been in their seats!
