Bud Kaeding runs 4th at Johnny Key Classic in Watsonville/Gold Cup Race of Champions up next

By Gary Thomas

Watsonville, CA – September 1, 2008…Making his final Wright One Construction 360 Series start of the season Campbell’s Bud Kaeding drove the Werbach Motorsports No. 20 sprinter to a fourth place finish on Friday night at Watsonville’s Ocean Speedway.

Friday’s event at the quarter-mile bullring also marked the 48th running of the Johnny Key Classic and Kaeding went into it looking to put the Los Gatos Construction Company sponsored machine into victory lane for the third time this season. The Key Classic features a unique format that locks drivers into the main event from previous races, rather than using a traditional show with time-trials and heats. Kaeding was part of the evening’s first dash, which set the first seven starting positions for the 50 lap main event.

Drivers each drew an individual pill for the dash and Kaeding happened to be the unfortunate one to get the highest number, putting him scratch on the field in the seven car, six lap contest. As the green flag flew Kaeding came to a stop on the back stretch with issues on the car, but was able to restart however, pulled into the infield shortly after to leave him with a seventh place finish.

The Ocean Speedway saw a hooked up and racy surface at the Johnny Key Classic and with fog rolling in, it made for some very fast paced laps in the main event. Lining-up in the fourth row Kaeding tried to manhandle the car on the tight bullring, as he fought the set-up during much of the main event. The 28 year-old spent much of the race dicing it up within the top five and after 50 laps of racing brought the Werbach Motorsports, Los Gatos Construction Company, SL & M No. 20 home in the fourth position.

Kaeding then flew out to DuQuoin, Illinois to compete on Sunday with the K & N Filters USAC Silver Crown Series where he timed in 13th out of 24 cars and drove to an 11th place finish in the main event aboard the MPD Racing Products, MDR Machine No. 29.

Next up for Kaeding will be this weekend’s 55th annual Gold Cup Race of Champions at the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico. The Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaws Sprint Series sanctioned event is the biggest winged sprint car race in the west and will pay $50,000 to the winner of Saturday nights A-main. In 2006 Kaeding had a great run in the Saturday night 40 lap feature at the Gold Cup as he charged 17th to 6th while driving his fathers Al’s Roofing Supply No. 69k.

Kaeding hasn’t competed aboard the BK Motorsports No. 29 winged 410 sprinter since the last weekend in July and will look to get back in the groove quickly at the competitive event, in which he’s scheduled to hit the track during the opening prelim night on Thursday. The Campbell veteran finished third in points this season with the Golden State Challenge Winged 410 Sprint Car Series and will look to put the season of experience in California to use at the Gold Cup.
