Know we're all sprint car fans here, but wanted to get the word out just in case some people were planning on coming down: I was looking forward to this event because it was a lot of fun last year and would have been good this season with the knowledge gained in '07 of what rules work, and which ones didn't.
U.S. Western Modified Nationals Cancelled
By Gary Thomas
Tulare, CA – August 26, 2008…The Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway is unfortunate to announce that the upcoming second annual U.S. Western Modified Nationals scheduled for September 25, 26 and 27 has been cancelled due to lower than expected pre-entries received, mainly because of the current economic times.
Everyone involved with the track was looking forward to the U.S. Western Modified Nationals, but there just weren’t enough pre-entries received to able to gamble with holding the $20,000 to win event. “With the way the economy is and the current gas prices it was just too much for teams to travel and commit to three night’s of racing,” said Thunderbowl Raceway’s Don Sharp. “It’s really just a sign of times and everyone tried hard, but it just wasn’t meant to be.”
The Thunderbowl Raceway and the Western States Modifieds Association wanted to set a deadline for entries to see if enough could be acquired, but when the August 23 date passed there wasn’t an adequate amount to hold the big event. Race officials wanted to make the deadline soon enough to allow other tracks to possibly schedule something for the dirt modified class, as well as allow competitors the chance to make alternative plans for the weekend of September 25, 26 and 27.
The toughest part about the cancellation might possibly be the fact that the Thunderbowl Raceway 1/3 mile clay oval has been in excellent shape all year long and terrific racing has been seen from the Western States Modifieds and the Golden Challenge Series Sprint Cars. Officials from the WSM will now turn their attention to next year’s events and with some luck the economy will turn around and the U.S. Western Modified Nationals can return to the schedule.
The next scheduled event for the Tulare Thunderbowl Raceway will be October 18’s Advance Auto Parts World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series event. More information can be found at http://www.tularethunderbowl.com

USAC/CRA missed out on their scheduled race @ the Thunderbowl earlier in the year due to rain. Maybe the track and the racing association can take the Saturday date. Its a great race track. Hopefully that weekend is open for the CRA sprint cars. Just a thought Gary.
