Travis Berryhill ready for USAC Western Midget action at Louis Vermeil Classic in Calistoga
By Gary Thomas
Calistoga, CA – August 26, 2008…Former American Canyon, CA midget racer and current Indiana resident Travis Berryhill is amped up and set to go for this weekend’s USAC sanctioned Louis Vermeil Classic at the historic Calistoga Speedway on Saturday and Sunday nights.
The event, which is being held at the beautiful Napa County Fairgrounds half-mile dirt track, is expected to be a huge showcase as the wingless 410 sprint cars return to the track for the very first time since 1985. The last wingless sprint car event at the Calistoga Speedway saw World of Outlaw regular Jac Haudenschild pick up the victory.
The Louis Vermeil Classic will also mark the first time since 1996 that the always exciting midgets have graced the long half-mile speed plant and Berryhill is eagerly awaiting the show. “I can’t wait for this weekend to be able to compete at the Vermeil Classic in Calistoga,” the 25 year-old said. “Calistoga has so much history behind it that everyone is looking forward to bringing back some memories with an all-wingless event.”
Berryhill has run sparingly this season after re-locating to Indiana to try and help further his racing career. Last weekend however, he competed at the Kings Speedway attempting to get the reflexes ready to go for this weekend’s running of the Vermeil Classic. Prior to that Berryhill’s previous race in California came in April where he brought home a fourth place finish with BCRA at the Placerville Speedway aboard the Vallejo Coin Exchange, Red Line Oil, Impact Racing No. 11.
The Louis Vermeil Classic will mark just the third weekend of racing this season at the Calistoga Speedway as the track has hosted just two prior night’s of competition, a pair of California Civil War 360 Winged Sprint Car Series races. Berryhill looks forward to having some fun at a track where NASCAR super-star Tony Stewart holds the all-time midget track record. “This Vermeil Classic is shaping up to be a huge deal and being able to compete in big events like this is always a good thing,” Berryhill commented. "I'm definitely expecting a packed house to be on hand this weekend and that always makes it a lot of fun for all the teams and drivers."
This weekend’s Louis Vermeil Classic will be kicked off with a wine tasting and autograph session on the fairgrounds at 1pm. Following that the USAC/CRA Wingless 410 Sprint Cars and the USAC Western Midgets are expected to hit the long Calistoga Speedway half-mile by 5:30 pm in an attempt to get things done by a decent hour. Seating is all general admission at the event and tickets cost $25 a night for what is expected to be an action filled two-night double-header.
