Zack West ready for Championship Night this Friday in Chico

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – August 21, 2008…Chico’s Zack West is geared up and ready to make his return to the track this Friday during the annual Coca-Cola championship night that puts a wrap on the 2008 Feather Falls Casino Silver Dollar Speedway weekly point season.

This Friday’s event at the Chico based quarter-mile will also receive support from Napa Auto Parts, Cherry St. Mini Storage and AAA Insurance. It will mark the 16th point race for the 410 sprint cars and West is looking forward to getting back on the track. “I recently had the chance to go back to Knoxville for the first time and had a blast, but we’re definitely ready to get back to business and finish off the Friday night season this weekend,” he said.

The 18 year-old driver has ran on limited occasions this season at the Silver Dollar Speedway and is coming off one of his best career performances during his last start on August 1. On that night West qualified fifth fastest aboard the Ing Excavation, Community Construction No. 14 and was holding down the third position in the main event when he got loose and spun to a stop just seven laps shy of the checkered.

Although the feature didn’t end the way he and the team would have liked, West goes into this Friday’s event with confidence from that night’s performance. “I’m just really ready to get back in the groove this week,” the Chico racer said. “We had a great night during our last start, but late in the main event the car just got really loose and I ended up looping it while trying hard to catch up to second place.”

This Friday’s event is expected to be a stacked affair with three-time World of Outlaw champion Sammy Swindell making his third start of the season at Silver Dollar Speedway, as well as two-time & current GSC King of California Jonathan Allard and the always tough Tyler Walker in competition. The track championship battle is also coming down to the wire as just nine points separate leader Andy Forsberg & second place Sean Becker.

To make things more exciting this Friday is also fan appreciation night and front grandstand tickets cost just $5. It’s expected to be a packed house as drivers battle for the six foot tall Coca-Cola trophy that is handed out to the winner of the main event. Cars are expected to hit the track around 6pm on Friday as the 410 sprint car point season is finished off at the Silver Dollar Speedway.

West will look to get tuned up this weekend with the 55th annual Gold Cup Race of Champions coming up in just a couple of weeks. “I’m eagerly awaiting the Gold Cup and am pretty much counting down the days,” the youngster said. “Gold Cup is shaping up to be a pretty huge deal this year and we’re all looking forward to competing and being a part of it,” he concluded.
