They still run a lot of non wing stuff in Indiana & that area. Of course USAC sprints & champ cars are non wing. I guess the big one would be the Peabody Classic held at the 1/2 mile in Perris Calif. I believe its in the fall Oct, maybe Nov.
I had the good fortune to go in 97' when Ron Shuman won the points deal on the last lap, also got to do the Turkey Nite midget deal when it was at Ventura. What a great week-end.
We need more non wing stuff around here. Actually when the 2 barrell class was being set up probably 75% of the drivers wanted to go with no wing, but SOMEBODY over ruled that, saying they needed to look like the super sprints.

the Chili Bowl is by far the biggest.
but then there is the Bidweiser Oval Nationals. Belleville Midget Nationals. Knoxville Midget Nationals. The Copper On Dirt (?) at Manzanita. there are actually a lot of big non wing races. -- there really isnt one standout like those above you mentioned ------- well except for the chili bowl.
indiana is like 1 big year long nationals. they do have some big non wing races at eldora too. theres a triple crown or something like that - where they run USAC sprints, sliver crown, and midgets.
the more i think of it - other than the chili bowl there really isnt 1 standout. because so many powerhouse heavy hittin drivers run different ones. kind of like how we have Darland, Bacon, Hagen, Clayton, K. Swindell, and Windham. but others might not have those guys - and have instead Jerry Coons Jr., Brad Sweet, Jon Stanbrough, Levi Jones, and others. i think USAC probably has the best collection of the best. the indiana speedweeks (both sprint and midget) - could prob count as some of the best racing in the world. i may even go as far to say - its the only non wing thing that can come close to the chili bowl. well - the big manzy race and perris and some others - but the indiana speedweeks have all the best - and all those tracks are within reasonable range of each other in 1 state - that isnt all that big. thats also why some more of the non wing guys and indiana guys didnt come i bet --------- they just finished the indiana midget week up there on sunday night.
kenny did you go to creek last night? for the 2nd year in a row ---- that race was............wow.

The race at Eldora is the 4-Crown. They run all of the USAC classes and modifieds I believe. For a few years they had the Mopar Million at Eldora. A lot of wing and non-wing drivers came out for that kind of money.

OKC, yes I was there. Awesome stuff. Is there anything better than a wingless 410? Quite a machine.

Cheese they do run the mods in the 4 crown. I sent an IM to the new president of USAC and told him we needed more non-wing stuff down here. I told him that he needed to come to the sprint bandits race at the fiargrounds as it would be a good show and he can see what the crowd looked like. He sent me an IM back and said he was making plans already to come and check out the sprint bandits next year.
In Indiana they run Fri, Sat and sometimes Sun. Like fan said you just don't have one track that gets all the heavy hitters they are spread out thoughout the state. That is the same way with Cali to although alot of those guys move to Indiana to race. If memory serves me right I think there are something like three dirt tracks within an hour of Indy that run non-wing cars off and on thoughout the season.
When we were at Brill's the night it rained and Mark re-worked the track the champs went out to repack the track without wings. A few of the drivers were heck lets run without the wings. Couple more of the big time races are the Hoosier Hundered at the Indiana State fairgrouds for silver crown cars and then you had the Hut Hundred at Terre Haute for the midgets.

I'm guessing lanny sees the non-wing deal as a liability. Just like the half mile. No wings means closer racing which means more wrecks, delayed show, and possible of someone getting hurt. He is an idiot. I wonder if sluggo will get a chin strap for his headset so it doesn't get knocked off again.

If they don't want delays then Lanny needs more wreckers out there. Those tractors can only do so much.

Part of the reason there is only one wrecker is because lanny acts like hes doing the wrecker driver a favor by letting them in free. Those guys could be making way better money towing drunks cars than listening to a drunk yell at them on the radio. Plus the one wrecker driver they do have is .... well more like the afore mention lanny. But he is fun to talk to.

The Hulman Classic used to be a big show (non wing sprints). For many years the Hoosier Hundred was THE biggest dirt non-wing show (Champ Dirt Cars).
But I think the Chili Bowl is the biggest non-wing deal now. Even though it's midgets, still it brings everybody out.

Kenny, there is no non-wing equal to Knoxville.
That being said, The Copper on Dirt at Manzanita comes pretty darn close.
I've gone to Manzy in the late winter/early spring for many years. The last two have seen the best racing ever.
USAC Silver Crown, midgets and USAC/CRA sprints. Lots and lots of racing without a wing in sight. Plus every lap is on a big half mile. Frankly, as good as Wednesday night's show at SFS was, it wouldn't have held a candle to just about every traditional sprint car show I've ever seen at Manzy.
I love how much "buzz" there is now about traditional sprint cars after a couple of shows in the area.

NW Bill, have you ever made it to Ventura ?? My late uncle was friends with Jim Naylor who did everything from answer the phone/drive the water truck & sell tickets. He lived about 20 minutes from Perris loved that track, but his all-time favorite was Santa Maria. It is built into the side of a hill , the banking on one end was natural. Was/is a GREAT track the CRA/SCRA guys loved to run at.

To answer the original question:
Oval Nationals at Perris Auto Speedway, typically last weekend of October/first weekend of November. An excellent vacation after the Short Track Nationals at I-30....
