Thanks Mom and Dad; “Chicko” Alissa Geving credits family support for success in open wheel racing

By Bill Sullivan & Alissa Geving

PENNGROVE, CA (8-12-08) – Since she was a little kid Alissa Geving had a love for playing in the mud and going fast. While most little girls were playing with dolls or dressing up their pets, Geving was infatuated with mud and grease, helping her father and former Petaluma Speedway champion Gary Geving work on his sprint car at their Penngrove home. It was that early interest in open wheel racing and strong family support that has gotten Geving to where she is today; one of Northern California’s most competitive sprint car drivers who is eyeing her first ever sprint car championship in the coming weeks.

At just 16-years of age, the career stats for Geving are outstanding. Following a successful kart racing career she adapted to sprint cars just a year ago, claiming rookie titles at both Petaluma Speedway and Antioch Speedway with victories at both tracks in her freshmen year. She was later awarded the Paul Tyler Rising Star Award from the Motorsports Press Association and has made uncountable appearances at public events, on radio and television.

For Geving, the success has occasionally been overwhelming but constantly increases her personal goal of performing even better, not only in racing but in every endeavor she takes on, from volunteering at food banks, doing well in school to working out and keeping fit. So just what is it that motivates this 16-year-old honor student to do so much in her life? The answer is pretty simple. Behind the sponsorships and media attention are two people that have stood out of the spotlight and been the wind beneath her wings. Alissa Geving’s biggest supporters are her parents, Gary and Melissa Geving who have been behind her from day one.

“If it wasn’t for my racing family and me growing up around the sport, I probably would not be driving a Sprint Car today,” writes Geving. “My parents are such contributors to the team and all around love racing as much as I do. My family has been by my side to help me overcome obstacles, hard times emotionally and physically. Without them I would not be as strong and as confident, and gosh, without their time, energy and love I don’t know what I would do.”

From the time she was born, Geving was destined to be behind the wheel of a race car. The need for speedway was in her blood as her grandfather, Leroy Geving was known for his success long before her father Gary Geving began his winning ways at Petaluma Speedway. As soon as Mom and Dad felt she was old enough she began her racing career and became the young lady to beat in oval track kart racing, it was then that her well known name “Chicko” came about courtesy of her dad.

“When I was a kid I use to drive through the slick of the track and spin my tires, “ said Geving. “My Dad would get so frustrated with me and he started calling me “Slicko Chicko.” The name stuck and to this day before he pushes me off he usually says those words that mean so much, “Go get ‘em Chicko.” It’s fun to have an ex sprint car driver helping me and walking around the house for on the spot advice”

Geving has a huge fan following. Attend a race a Petaluma Speedway and half of the t-shirts in the stands are donning the popular Chicko Motorsports #3x Sprint Car on them. At other tracks she visits on occasion like Placerville and Chico, fans flock to the pit area to meet the young lady driver that is well on her way to higher levels of auto racing. For Geving, the fan support is important and she takes time to talk to each and everyone of them and once in awhile they ask about someone that is no longer here but very special to her.

“It’s a great feeling when people come up to me and tell me that they knew of my grandpa who was known as “Go Get Em Geving,” she said. Some people even tell me they raced with him. I am glad I am racing, Grandpa would be proud. I just wish he was here today to see me race, we could talk about track set ups.”

In the coming weeks, Geving will be campaigning for two of the biggest goals in her racing career, the Petaluma Speedway All Pro Series Championship and the 2008 Rookie of the Year Title in the traveling Civil War Sprint Car Series. Regardless of how her season concludes, she is thankful for the love and support of her family that has helped travel so far in her racing career and will surely support her in what’s to come. It is that support that is far superior to any trophy, title or championship check.

“My family is the core of my racing career,” added Geving. “My happiness revolves around that core, through the good times and the bad. I have my Mom and Dad to keep me in line and I am proud to say that. Mom and Dad, thank you for everything you do for me... I love you.”

Best of luck to Alissa the rest of the season. Had to be a pretty good feeling to hold off BK in the heat race at Calistoga for the win.
