USAC POSTPONES INAUGRUAL INDIANA MIDGET WEEK EVENT TO BE HELD AT UNION COUNTY SPEEDWAY

USAC Officials announced the indefinite postponement of the Indiana Midget Week event scheduled today at Union County Speedway due to extensive safety concerns. USAC Officials met at length with team representatives and drivers prior to making the decision. Series officials deemed the corrective action required could not be completed in time for the evening's competition.

"We are postponing today's race at Union County amid numerous safety concerns raised by both our Officials and Teams" stated Kevin Miller, CEO of USAC Racing. "We offer our sincerest apologies to our fans and our associates at Union County Speedway. I am confident in the final decision made by USAC Officials, as our first priority is to ensure the safety of our competitors and fans. "

Indiana Midget Week continues at Bloomington Speedway on Friday, Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday and concludes at Kokomo Speedway Sunday evening.

Turn 3 had rebar exposed on top of the cement wall - it was bent over but consider a car rolling across that and catching some. Entrace to turn three for the first 30 feet had not retaining fence on top so yes someone could have got up there.

Someone mentioned that 1 or 2 had exposed rebar hanging out in the track (I did not see this from where I was standing).

No retaining fence in turns 1 & 2 - that in itself was not an issue - but there were apparently cut off pipes coming out of the ground outside 1 & 2 - go for a ride over the 3 ft cement fence and end up impalled.

A cement "curb" running under the flag stand - they buried it with dirt and packed it. If you hit it at speed (ran up near the wall past the flag stand) you were likely going for a nasty ride.

I understand both USAC officials and drivers noted the issues - the drivers were give the chance to vote and determined they were not going to race. 12 sprinters and 14 midgets stayed for the show. I beleive there were 18-20 sprinters on hand and 30ish midgets to start.

We packed up and got out of there. Hopefully they will work on the place and get it right next time.

Man that is unfortunate for the fans that traveled to see this show. Seems to me USAC should have picked up on these issues long before the day of the race. Shame shame...
