Mechanical issue takes away possible win for Mason Myers

By Gary Thomas

Chico, CA – August 3, 2008…After a few weeks of tough luck Browns Valley’s Mason Myers appeared to be headed for good things on Friday night until mechanical issues took away a possible chance at his first career wingless sprint car victory at the Silver Dollar Speedway.

The 23rd Joe Hunt Magnetos wingless sprint car point race at the Silver Dollar Speedway saw 20 cars on hand for the start of the final month of point racing at the quarter-mile clay oval. The month of August finds Myers Brothers Racing doing everything possible to get tuned up for the big Wednesday night Gold Cup Wingless Invitational event, which is coming up on September 3 and also marks the very last point race for the class.

Mason Myers began the event this past Friday by charging from sixth to second in his heat race and when the right pill was drawn for the inversion it put the Performance Auto Supply, Cal West Concrete No. 3m on the front row for the main event. The starting spot gave Mason a prime opportunity to go after that first win of the season and when the green lights came on he charged out into the lead.

Coming into the night third in points, Mason pulled away from the field as the car was locked down to the speedway and appeared to have a good shot at victory, until smoke began to appear on lap five. It was heartbreak city for Myers as the smoke began to get worse and he pulled the Franks Backhoe No. 3m sprinter into the infield on the next lap to put an end to the night.

Brother Cody went into the evening ranking fourth in the JPM/Joe Hunt Magnetos wingless standings and kicked off the night by tallying a sixth place finish in his heat race. He then lined-up on the outside of the sixth row in the 20 lap main event and was able to battle forward to pick up a few spots and finish in the eighth position aboard the Aces Heavy Transport, Matco Tools No. 9.

The night didn’t finish off how it had the potential to, but like all season long the Myers Brothers Racing Team will move on and look to turn things around with an upcoming double-header weekend of action with the Joe Hunt Magnetoes Wingless Sprint Car Series. Friday night it will back to the Silver Dollar Speedway with hopes of putting it all together and getting season win number one during a night sponsored by Ashley Furniture.

Then on Saturday it will be off to the Placerville Speedway bullring for “Totally Wingless Saturday” where the Myers Brothers Racing Team will look to keep up the recent trend of success at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds track. Following the event in Placerville there will be just two more races remaining in the JPM wingless season before the Wednesday night invitational on Sep 3, which will be run in conjunction with the California Civil War Series and kicks off the annual Gold Cup Race of Champions week.
